The doctor advises on how to deal with flatulence in the newborn

The cause of the occurrence of flatulence in the newborn there is air that is trapped in the large intestine, causing colic and sharp abdominal pain. One of the most common causes of air in the digestive tract is swallowing it while feeding, crying, or sucking on a pacifier.

To reduce the risk of your baby swallowing air while feeding, it is important to try to keep your baby’s head higher than his tummy. This makes the air easier to reflect. If you are feeding with a bottle, first squeeze out excess air from the part intended for feeding.

Every newborn baby is different and it is important to develop a system that allows your baby to reflect excess air after and before feeding, and every 3-5 minutes during feeding. This will prevent air from entering the colon where it will cause gas and pain.

As the digestive tract is still developing in a 3-month-old baby, symptoms such as colic, pouring rain, abdominal pain and foul gas are usually physiological symptoms and should not be alarming.

Usually, the above-mentioned symptoms may appear after the child eats too greedily, swallows too much air, especially during a quick bottle feed, or simply because new ingredients are introduced into the diet. In breastfed infants, this may be the introduction of new products to the mother’s diet.

However, you should not eliminate healthy foods from the mother’s diet that cause gas in the infant, as the infant’s gastrointestinal tract develops over time, and the infant will be able to digest more different foods better. It should not be assumed in advance that a child is allergic to a particular product.

Under no circumstances should you refrain from breastfeeding just because of foul gas. Breast milk is the best possible food available for your baby, it contains all the necessary nutrients, and the fats (the very healthy polyunsaturated fatty acids PUFA) in breast milk are easier to digest than those found in ready-made formulas.

The most important ingredients, not available in artificial mixtures, are immunoprotective ingredients derived from the mother. They provide protection against too frequent infections. These ingredients include, among others lactoferrin, IgA and other immunoglobulins, lysozyme and maternal leukocytes. In addition to the above-mentioned ingredients, breast milk is also rich in vitamins: A, D, E, K, C, B6, B12, folates, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin.
