Summer, vacation, beach and deckchairs invite you to soak up the sun. However, the result of uncontrolled sunbathing can be dangerous burns, to which especially people with fair complexion are exposed. How to deal with unpleasant pain and burning?

Remedies for sunburn – a cool shower

Cool water in the form of short and gentle showers or compresses will be useful in the case of first-degree burns, manifested by redness of smaller or larger areas of the body. It is not recommended to use cold ice, which in combination with hot and irritated skin can cause even more pain.

Cooling effects are also available at the pharmacy: gels, ointments, lotions, sprays and foams.

After the epidermis has cooled down, the next step is to apply a special ointment or cream to the sunburn. The best results will be achieved with preparations containing in their composition: a derivative of uric acid – allantoin and D-panthenol, also known as provitamin B5. The pharmacy also offers agents containing onion and garlic extract, which have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, thus preventing the formation of burn exudates. Gauze compresses soaked in kefir, sour milk or buttermilk will also be helpful in relieving pain and redness. During tanning, the correct, acidic pH of the skin is disturbed, which ensures adequate hydration and protection against microorganisms.

Products containing large amounts of live bacteria cultures, such as kefir or curdled milk, will help us regain the correct pH level of the skin. What’s more, they contain numerous cow’s milk proteins and vitamins A, D and E, which regenerate damaged epidermis. Remember to choose sugar-free dairy products.

In folk medicine, the so-called “Liquid gold” has been used in the treatment of burns for centuries. Honey accelerates the healing of wounds, and thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, it prevents the appearance of blisters. Additionally, it prevents the formation of scars. Therefore, at least one jar should always be available in your home medicine cabinet. It is best to put honey on gauze and to places exposed to long-term sun exposure.

Another remedy for skin problems that has been known for centuries is aloe vera. Aloe leaf juice contains enzymes that accelerate the regeneration of the epidermis, saponins with astringent and cleansing properties, and aloectin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. What’s more, it activates connective tissue cells that are responsible for skin healing. Although you can find it in many pharmacy ointments and creams, you can also prepare a soothing gel yourself. All you have to do is blend the gelatinous flesh from the outer leaves and put it in a glass jar. In this way, you can keep the “home preparation for burns” in the refrigerator for up to several months.

Remedies for sunburn – herbal compresses

Another home remedy for sunburn is calendula compresses, which reduce inflammation. Two tablespoons of fresh or dried flowers of the herb should be boiled in a glass of water and set aside, covered to infuse. After it has cooled down, gauze is soaked in the infusion and placed on the sick areas. The same can be done with mint, which has a cooling effect. Witch hazel, also known as “Indian gold”, is also a plant used to soothe skin burns. On its basis, a tonic is prepared that cools, reduces redness and itching of the skin and accelerates healing.

You can also use organic white cabbage juice for burns. The skin can also be smeared with sea buckthorn oil for burns, frostbite, atopy and dry skin.
