Water lily flower: description
If there is an artificial reservoir on your site, then the yellow water lily flower will be its best decoration. In addition, the plant has the ability to purify water. Therefore, it is often grown as a natural filter.
This plant is a perennial from the water lily family. In its natural environment, it can be found in reservoirs with stagnant water or weak currents: in swamps, in small lakes and ponds. The yellow water lily is very common in the European part of our country. The roots of the culture are quite strong with a length of up to 1 meter. Thanks to them, the plant clings to the bottom of the reservoir. The leaves of a water lily are semicircular in shape, dark green in color with a glossy sheen. Their diameter reaches 20-30 cm.
The second name of the plant is “egg capsule”, it appeared because of the unusual pistil, which resembles a small jug in shape.
The flowering period begins in the second half of May and lasts until September. The plant produces single, large, multi-petal peduncles. Their color is golden yellow. The culture exudes a pleasant, strong aroma. After flowering, a seed box is formed. They usually ripen by the end of October.
Planting and caring for a yellow water lily in a pond
The plant propagates both by seed and by root division. Moreover, the second option is much simpler. Work should start in May-June. Landing is carried out in this way:
- In a pot with a large diameter, clay soil is laid, mixed with humus in a 2: 1 ratio.
- A small depression is made in the center, where the roots of the plant are laid.
- The neck should rise slightly above ground level.
- The soil is well crushed and covered with a 4-centimeter layer of river sand.
- If there are fish in the reservoir, then the rhizome of the plant should be protected with small stones.
After that, the pot is gently immersed in water. When choosing a crop, keep in mind that for large varieties, a reservoir with a depth of 0,5 to 2 meters is needed. The yellow water lily does not require special care and feels great without any attention at all.
The only thing that should be provided for her is preparation for the winter period. If the distance between the surface of the water and the pot is more than 1 meter, then you can leave the egg capsule in the reservoir. Otherwise, you should move the plant indoors:
- Remove the water lily pot from the pond.
- Trim off the entire surface of the plant.
- Wrap the pot in a double layer of polyethylene.
- Place the culture container in a basement or a cool room with a temperature of 10 ° C.
- You can return the pot to the pond in mid-spring.
Delicate yellow water lily will become the highlight of your pond. And with a minimum of attention, this plant will delight with its impeccable appearance all summer long.
