Ticks are wrongly associated with high meadows, somewhere in the countryside and forests. You will meet them while walking in the park in the middle of the city, and even on the lawn in front of your house. They are most active in May and June as well as in September and October, but you have to be careful practically all year round. What do you need to know about ticks? Ticks – the most important information
Ticks belong to the arachnid family. Depending on the development stage, ticks feed on small and larger animals and on humans. A tick bite does not hurt, since there are anesthetic substances in its saliva.
Ticks most often bite in places where the skin is thin and warm: under the knees, in the crook of the elbows, under the breasts. behind the ear or in the groin. This makes them harder to spot.
Ticks are carriers of over 20 different pathogens that cause zoonoses. The best known are Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis. It is estimated that approx. 30 percent. In Poland, ticks are carriers of the Lyme spirochete, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. In 2019, over 20 cases of this disease were diagnosed in Poland. Unlike tick-borne encephalitis, Lyme disease is not a vaccine.
