What can’t dietary supplements contain?

Dietary supplements complement what we eat every day. They are readily used, especially by people who care about a healthy lifestyle. They can be a concentrated source of vitamins, minerals, have a nourishing or strengthening effect on the body. However, it’s worth reading their labels carefully for a complete list of ingredients. Some of them can have a completely opposite effect and cause adverse side effects. The list of such undesirable ingredients was developed by the Team for Dietary Supplements operating at the Sanitary and Epidemiological Council.

Hair loss, alopecia, hallucinations, anxiety, hormonal disorders, attacks of aggression – these are just some of the effects that the consumption of these ingredients can cause. In some cases, it can even cause a heart attack. Headaches, nausea and vomiting are small things, although they can also make life difficult. For now, the Diet Supplements Team, based on scientific data, has established the first list of harmful ingredients in dietary supplements. It will be successively supplemented.

The list of harmful ingredients of dietary supplements includes the following substances:

  1. Yohimbine hydrochloride and the yohimbine group

This substance is a component of medicinal products administered orally in cases of erectile dysfunction, as well as in agents supporting the reduction of adipose tissue. Consumed in excess can induce nausea and vomiting as well hypertension, heart rhythm disturbances, nervousness, insomnia, excessive agitation, strong sweating, dizziness, hallucinations, and in extreme situations even myocardial infarction.

  1. Methystine pepper

Also known as kava kava, it belongs to the pepper family. Methystine pepper has been used for thousands of years, incl. for healing and relaxation purposes. In some countries, the EU has been withdrawn because of its hepatotoxicity, as well as carcinogenic potential. In addition, when consumed in excess, it can cause imbalances, walking problems or increased sleepiness, as well as loss of appetite, diarrhea and skin changes.

  1. Pancreatina

It is a component of preparations used, among others in states of pancreatic insufficiency. Many of them are registered in Poland. It is supposed to support digestive processes and facilitate the absorption of proteins, fats and starch. It can cause side effects in the form of gastrointestinal disorders, rash, urticaria, disorders of the immune system. Taking higher doses may be associated with increased levels of uric acid in urine and blood.

Preparations with this ingredient can stimulate the body to increase the production of growth hormone. It also has potential in the treatment of early stage Alzheimer’s disease. The side effects include decreased insulin sensitivity, swelling of the lower and upper limbs, joint pain, a tingling sensation, a significant increase in the feeling of hunger.

  1. DMAA

DMAA as an amphetamine derivative was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency in 2009. Various substances are used under this term. Some of them may impair liver function, cause a rapid increase in blood pressure, shortness of breath, arrhythmia and even a heart attack. Especially if their consumption is combined with, for example, caffeine.

  1. Ligandrol and Ostarine

Substances popular with athletes. They are known for their anabolic effects on muscles and bones. They are on the Anti-Doping Organization Prohibition List. They can cause liver damage, hair loss and alopecia, worsening of acne and skin blemishes, acute headaches.
