Washing things that cannot be washed

Washing things that cannot be washed

Do you have extra money to donate a light coat, gray suit, and white down jacket to the dry cleaner every week? No? Then we go to you!

Coat

  • Fabric: 50% wool, 50% acrylic.

  • Washing mode: 50 degrees, no spinning.

I wore a white coat, bought for ridiculous money at a sale, with pride for a week, until it turned gray. Exceptional cleaning was prescribed on the tag. Paying a price for such an event, almost equal to what I paid for the coat itself, was the height of waste, and I put it in the washing machine, choosing a gentle spinning mode.

Taking my coat out of the drum, I straightened it and hung it on a hanger. The water is glass without leaving strong creases on the fabric. After that, I ironed it still wet through cheesecloth and hung it on the loggia to dry. Within a day, the coat was as good as new!

Council

When ironing a wet coat with an iron, in no case stretch the fabric, otherwise it will deform and you will have to wet it again to shrink.

Men’s suit

  • Fabric: 100% acrylic.

  • Washing mode: 40 degrees, no spinning.

On the eve of my girlfriend’s wedding, I crawled into the closet to inspect the holiday outfits, and found that my boyfriend’s suit after another, a month ago, a partying wedding turned out to be, to put it mildly, not brand new. Urgent action had to be taken. I had to take a risk and send the suit to the wash.

I used the same washing method – in cold water and without spinning.

Smoothed it out while still wet. In the morning, it remains only to iron out the arrows on the trousers.

From experience

I learned from a friend that a man’s suit can be washed. Moreover, unlike my case (one hundred percent synthetic), she washed a half-woolen suit in the machine – and nothing terrible happened to him either.

Down jacket

  • Fabric: 100% polyester, down with added feathers.

  • Washing mode: 40 degrees, no spinning.

No matter how much I persuaded the young man to buy a sheepskin coat, he wanted another down jacket. Well, you want it, you want it so much. We bought it. The light gray trim of the collar gave me some concerns from the start. And they very soon came true. Cleaning the down jacket exactly two weeks after the purchase cost us 800 rubles. I didn’t want to make such an item of expenses permanent. There was only one way out – to wash.

At a water temperature of 50 degrees, the jacket was washed, but the rinse cycle was not enough. The down jacket taken out of the car was covered in powder crumbs. I had to rinse it again, this time with my hands in the bathroom. Conclusion: use liquid detergent to wash your down jacket! It will also help prevent streaks on dry fabrics.

After the water drains, the down jacket must be hung on a hanger-hanger and dried in the sun, now and then spreading the lumps of fluff stuck together from the water with your fingers. In the sun in a glazed loggia, my jacket dried for 3 days. At the same time, every day I straightened the fluff and turned the down jacket upside down. As a result, he again became voluminous and clean.

Council

Do not put anything else in the washing machine with the down jacket. It inflates from the water and takes up the entire space of the drum.

For sure pillows and duvets also machine washable. True, I have not yet had time to be convinced of this from my own experience. Of course, the pillows will take a little longer to dry, and it will take a man’s help to get the wet blanket out of the drum. But why not, if you are not in a hurry, you have a faithful assistant and you do not want to give too much money, which, as you know, is never superfluous.

When it comes to washing delicate items, I prefer to play it safe. The expensive men’s suit, which the spouse wore to the wedding, but left for further wear later, we wore exclusively to dry cleaning. Although the label said it was washable, they did not risk it.

It was a sad experience with outerwear. I washed my Reebok down jacket in a machine at a delicate level, and it ceased to be a down jacket: everything inside crumpled up, and even over time it was not possible to distribute the filler evenly.

So for those who are planning to wash men’s suits and outerwear, I recommend either contacting a dry cleaner or resorting to the advice suggested above.
