Washing machine leaking – what to do

Some time after starting, did you notice that the washing machine is leaking? Why could this happen, after all, you conducted the launch as usual? It is necessary to carefully inspect the body, establish the place where the water flows from. Then diagnose and fix the problem.

To do this quickly and safely, follow our instructions.

Safety measures

If you entered the room and saw water on the floor near the washing machine, don’t step into the puddle. Try to reach out and pull the plug out of the socket, unplug the CMA from the mains. If this is not possible, turn off the power supply at the panel.

To stop the flow of water, shut off its supply at the inlet valve of the washer. You can also turn off the water at the main tap in the apartment (house). Then proceed like this:

  • Open the small hatch at the bottom of the front panel.
  • Substitute the container and unscrew the filter, draining the remaining water from the tank.
  • Remove and unscrew all laundry.

Start checking out the tech.

Why did SMA leak

When examining, pay attention to where the water flowed from and at what stage of the program it happened.

  1. Water flows from below, from under the legs of the washing machine. The leak may be in the drain filter. Perhaps, while unscrewing the filter before draining, you noticed that it was unevenly installed or not completely screwed in. Screw it all the way in carefully. If your model has bolts, additionally secure them in place.
  2. It comes out from under the car when taking in water – this indicates a leak in the inlet hose. Its attachment to the machine body could be broken, or the body of the hose was damaged, and it began to let water through.
  3. Water flows out of the dispenser tray during washing or rinsing. Without timely cleaning, powder sticks to the walls of the tray, its hole becomes clogged and interferes with the normal flow of water into the tank. Also, the reason may be in the strong pressure of the water. The inlet valve admits a flow that flushes the powder out of the dispenser. If the pressure is too strong, the water will pour out and run down the body.
  4. If the machine is turned off, but you can hear the murmur of water and see a leak, the problem is in the fill valve. Stopping the water intake, the valve closes the inlets with a membrane. This membrane may have been damaged, or the hoses from the valve to the hopper have come loose.
  5. The SMA hatch is leaking. To determine what the breakdown is, an inspection of the hatch cuff will help. If she was damaged, she began to let water through.
  6. Is the bottom leaking, water flows out from the bottom of the case during the spin cycle? Most likely, the reason is in the drain pipes and hoses. The fastenings could be broken, because of which they began to flow. The same thing happens if the drain pump is damaged.

What to do and how to get rid of the problem, read below.

How to troubleshoot

To fix the problem, start inspecting all parts and assemblies of the washer. Before doing this, unplug the machine and turn off the water.

Replace inlet hose

The hose is attached to the CMA body at the rear. Inspect the mount: if it is loose, tighten the nut until it stops.

If you notice damage to the hose through which water flows, do not repair it, it is better to completely replace it. For this:

  • Unscrew one end of the hose from the housing.
  • Disconnect the other end from the faucet.
  • Install the new element in reverse order.

You can buy a hose at a plumbing store. Pay attention to its length, it should not be too short.

Clean dispenser and filling valve

Cleaning the tray is easy:

  • Pull the tray towards you while pressing the latch in the center.
  • Rinse it thoroughly under running water, removing detergents.

To check the valve, you need to remove the top cover of the washing machine. Remove two screws from the back. You will see that there are two hoses leading from the valve to the hopper (depending on the type of valve). They are fastened with clamps.

Look: if some fastener has moved away, it needs to be restored. If damaged, the hoses are replaced.

Repair sunroof cuff

The sealing gum on the hatch additionally seals all openings during washing. Over time, it can leak, which is facilitated by fungi and mold. The cuff has been damaged during washing. These may be sharp objects that have not been removed from pockets.

What to do:

  • Open hatch door.
  • Inspect the rubber for breaks.
  • If a small gap is noticed, you can seal it with a special moisture-resistant glue. Boat patches are also used. To perform a quality repair, it is better to remove the cuff from the hatch.

Information on how to remove the rubber cuff may be useful if it is replaced:

  1. Remove the outer clamp. Having unbent a cuff, pry a collar a flat screw-driver and remove.
  2. Insert the seal inside the drum.
  3. Disconnect the wiring of the hatch lock and unscrew the bolts of its fastening.
  4. Remove the top cover from the case.
  5. Pull out the dispenser tray.
  6. Unscrew the bolts securing the control panel and disconnect it from the housing.
  7. Remove the plinth panel. Now unscrew all the bolts holding the front panel.
  8. With the panel out of the way, disconnect the upper and lower hoses leading to the cuff.
  9. Remove the inner collar and entire cuff from the tank.

If during the inspection it turned out that the damage to the rubber is too great, it is better to install a new element so that the accident does not happen again.

Replace filler pipe

To check the pipe from the hopper to the tank, you also need to remove the front panel. If, upon inspection, water streaks are found on the tank, then the problem is in the pipe. Since it is attached to the tank with glue, disconnect the pipe and dry it.

To secure the hose, clean the connection. The element is attached with epoxy resin or glue.

Check tank

Today, washing machines are equipped with lightweight plastic tanks made of polymers. Therefore, a trifle or other items forgotten in pockets can damage it. It happens that the heating element, overheating, breaks, as a result, its fragment damages the tank wall.

Before making a decision, you need to make sure that there is a malfunction:

  • Through the bottom, inspect the CMA tank for water leaks. If any are found, the tank needs to be replaced.
  • If your CM is top loaded, remove the side panel for inspection.

Temporary repair of the tank does not bring results. It will leak over time anyway.

Another cause of leakage may be damaged sealing rubber, which is located at the junction of the two parts of the tank. In any case, you will have to completely disassemble the washer, replace or repair the tank.

Replace oil seal

When examining it, pay attention to the back. If streaks are visible from the side of the bearings, it means that the oil seal has worn out, or the grease has washed out and needs to be renewed.

The seal protects the bearings from moisture penetration. Therefore, when it is worn, the bearings also need to be replaced. To do this, buy a repair kit and special grease for oil seals in the store.

Check drain pipe and pump

The drain pump can be located in the rear or in the front of the housing:

  1. The front wall must be dismantled in the Bosch, AEG, Siemens models.
  2. Get to the pump through the bottom and remove the bottom panel – in the washing machines “Samsung”, “Indesit”, “Ariston”, LG, “Ardo”, “Kandy”, “Whirlpul”, “Beko”.
  3. Remove the back panel – in cars of the Electrolux and Zanussi brands.

Examine the drain pipe. In case of damage, replace it with a new element. To do this, open the clamps with pliers, disconnect the pipe from the tank and pump.

You can inspect and replace the drain pump if damaged yourself.

In the first case (access through the front wall) the pump is mounted on the cochlea. Unscrew its fixing bolts and remove the part. Separate the pump from the volute by unscrewing the screws around the perimeter and opening the latches.

The second option also provides for the presence of a snail. Dismantling is carried out as in the first case.

In the third case disconnect the wires from the pump, unscrew the fasteners of the snail, remove the pump along with the pipe and hose. Unscrew the screws of the snail and release the latches.

After considering the various causes of breakage, we can conclude: always clean clothes from foreign objects before washing. Proper installation of the machine is also important, because strong vibrations lead to weakening of the hose fasteners and the appearance of a leak.
