What is Atlantis
Atlantis is a mythical island state. His description is known from the dialogues of Plato, from the mentions and comments of Herodotus, Diodorus Siculus, Strabo, Proclus and Posidonius.
Science fiction novels and some research by scientists often touch upon the existence of this ancient civilization. There is still no exact information about the location of the mysterious country and the reasons for its disappearance.
The first who introduced modern man to Atlantis was the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. He described it as an island paradise, where the inhabitants enjoyed an abundance of all kinds of benefits. He also learned about this country from the stories of his great-grandfather Solon.
In his opinion, the country existed in the place where the continent once was, and now the ocean is raging. The country consisted of large and comfortable cities, surrounded by dense forests and equipped with a system of irrigation canals. The townspeople mastered the craft, agriculture and cattle breeding.
Plato argued that the location of this state was close to the territory of modern Greece. Between them on the territory of the Atlantic Ocean were the Pillars of Hercules.
The state included a federation of unification of ten kingdoms. The inhabitants of the country were distinguished by their belligerence and desire to conquer new territories, including neighboring countries.
According to Plato, Atlantis was destroyed by an earthquake, and it disappeared in just one day. Nowadays, many doubt that there was once such a civilization.
Rebuttals and proofs
Historians deny the existence of Atlantis. They deny the presence of civilization during the Ice Age. Given the fact that in our time you can find tribes with primitive development, historians argue that the inhabitants of Atlantis could not live at the same time with the cavemen.
They also do not recognize the rapid destruction of the continent, even a small one.
But each legend is based on real facts, despite the fact that it often gives rise to false conclusions. Some researchers believe that the found Mid-Atlantic Ridge with the adjacent plateau is part of a continent that sank 12000 years ago, namely Atlantis.
Another reason for arguing for the existence of Atlantis is the discovery of the ruins of ancient structures. The ruins of numerous buildings – stairs, walls, and even sculptures – were discovered off the coast of the Azores.
Researchers – members of the expedition on the ship “Akademik Petrovsky” presented some more evidence of the possibility of the existence of a great civilization. They took photographs of the territory of the underwater volcano Ampere, located at a depth of 66-68 m. The photographs show the ruins of stone buildings up to 2 m high.
You can also notice that numerous buildings and ruins of the underground city are covered with solidified lava. After examining samples of building material, the researchers suggested that this rock is at least 12000 years old. This fact suggests that Atlantis was once located in this place.
Oceanographers, exploring the territory of the Bermuda Triangle, found a huge pyramid at a distance of 600 meters in depth, which is much larger in size than the Egyptian pyramid of Cheops! Some scientists suggest that this building is part of a legendary civilization that once existed.
