If you have had COVID-19 or have recently taken the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine – be careful, especially if you are going on vacation – says Italian dermatologist Dr. Luca Fania. The doctor urges people who are affected by these two situations to be careful in the open air, especially when enjoying the sun. Why is it so important and what protection measures do doctors recommend? WE EXPLAIN.
- Dr. Luca Fania reminds that both COVID-19 and vaccines can cause skin changes, including: hives, rash, which may make the skin weaker and more exposed to the sun
- Recuperators and vaccinated people should wait a few weeks before tanning, and must do so gradually

To convalescents and those vaccinated against COVID-19: be careful outdoors
“SorrIDI al sole” (freely translated, “Smile in the sun”) is the name of a campaign promoting the prevention of skin cancer that has just started in Italy. The action also raises issues related to the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, the recommendations addressed to people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or recently vaccinated may surprise many. «Anyone who finds themselves in either of these two situations must exercise extreme caution when going on vacation. And, in particular, he must be careful about sun exposure » – writes “Libero”. Nay, you have to be careful when you are outdoors. Where did this warning come from?
Dr. Luca Fania, a dermatologist at the IDI Farmaceutici dermatology clinic, who promotes the campaign, reminds that both COVID-19 and vaccines can be associated with changes in the skin area. Urticaria, erythematous-papular rash or erythematous-vesicular rash may appear in the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection (doctors warn that this may even be its only symptom). Similarly, after vaccination against COVID-19, “skin rashes, hives or erythema” may occur. Sometimes there is the development of the so-called “Covid arm”, which is in the form of a red swollen lesion, sometimes painful to the touch.

All of these changes weaken the skin, leaving it exposed to the sun and therefore skin cancer. Italian experts therefore emphasize: skin symptoms associated with different stages of COVID-19 or appearing after the administration of the vaccine requires as much protection as possible.
How should the healed and vaccinated protect themselves? Doctors’ advice
What protection measures do Italian dermatologists recommend for convalescents and those vaccinated against COVID-19? Dr. Luca Fania says bluntly that these people should wait a few weeks before tanning, and then it should be done gradually, using high protection creams.
Sun protection should be used not only when sunbathing, but also when outdoors in general. As the daily Il Messaggero explains, photoprotection is indispensable and relies on the use of reflective or diffractive UV radiation or to absorb UV radiation after exposure to solar radiation. Doctors emphasize that a sun protection factor (SPF) should be at least 30, and that the sun protection product “should be applied every time you are exposed to UV rays, that is, even when you leave the house”.
- Filter cream – how does it work?
Local photoprotection can be enhanced by activities affecting the entire body, i.e. oral intake of vitamins, minerals, carotenoids with photoprotective and antiphotocarcinogenic properties. These substances strengthen the natural protection against the harmful effects of UV radiation and prevent the formation of cancer.
What to do when NOP occurs on vacation?
Of course, we must remember about sun protection not only after getting COVID-19 or getting vaccinated against the coronavirus. One should always remember about her. And it’s not just skin cancer. As Bartosz Fiałek, a physician and promoter of medical knowledge, a specialist in the field of rheumatology, reminds: – Sunbathing itself is dangerous. The sun emits ultraviolet radiation, UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. The latter two can damage the DNA chain leading to mutations, including those that generate cancer. It also increases the risk of eye diseases – cataracts.
Genetic mail-order test assessing the risk of developing melanoma. It is especially important for people over 40 – this is when the disease manifests itself most often. You can buy the survey on Medonet Market.
In addition to the advice of Italian dermatologists, should people going on vacation, vaccinated against COVID-19, take any more precautions? – Vaccination against COVID-19, as well as any other vaccination, does not exclude us from normal life. So, you can go to the sea or lake after vaccination – emphasizes Dr. Fiałek.
At the same time, the doctor reminds: – Of course, when we experience adverse post-vaccination reactions, we should rest, drink a lot, take painkillers or antipyretics. In the context of the diet, I recommend eating healthy. Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 does not require us to follow a particular diet.
