In the Nordic countries, sore throats and coughs have long been treated with warm beer. This tool acts more slowly than the advertised pharmacy drugs, but it has no side effects. You just need to know the correct cooking recipes and take into account contraindications.
For sore throats and coughs, live beer helps better than canned beer, since the drink without preservatives retains vitamins B and C, which help strengthen the immune system. For treatment, it is preferable to use weak, light varieties. But if there is no choice, any beer will do, as long as it contains hops (it has analgesic and antispasmodic properties).
The effect of warm beer on the body:
- alcohol promotes vasodilation and enhances blood microcirculation. But there is very little ethanol in the drink, so hot beer for coughing has a much more gentle effect on the cardiovascular system than popular folk remedies with vodka, cognac and other spirits;
- due to the fact that the pores expand, the release of sweat increases, and with it – and toxins;
- dry cough turns into wet;
- warm beer liquefies phlegm, and it goes away faster;
- breathing easier with a runny nose;
- hops reduces inflammation of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, relieves pain, eliminates sore throat.

Hot beer recipes for cough and sore throat
At temperatures above + 80 ° C, most of the alcohol evaporates from the beer. In order not to reduce the healing effect, the beer is not boiled, but heated in an enamel or glass refractory dish to a temperature of 45-50 ° C.
It is also convenient to reheat beer in a water bath or in a microwave oven. In the latter case, the drink is poured into a ceramic container.
If you need to prepare medicine for a teenager 12-16 years old or a person who does not take alcohol well, then the beer is heated almost to a boil so that the ethanol evaporates and the drink is equal in strength to kefir, and then cooled to 45-50 ° C.
The easiest cough beer recipe is German. In Germany, it is customary to simply warm up the drink and consume it as hot as possible without any additives. Unfortunately, the taste of the drink leaves a lot to be desired. Therefore, there are many medical recipes for beer with various additives that ennoble the taste and enhance the effect.
For the treatment of cough:
- a tablespoon of honey is bred in a glass of hot beer. Since honey loses its medicinal properties when heated, the temperature of the beer should not be higher than + 50 ° C. A portion is for one meal;
- a glass of beer is heated in a water bath with a pinch of ground cinnamon, ginger, cloves and other spices to taste. Before drinking, add a tablespoon of honey and 1-2 teaspoons of lemon juice (or a slice of lemon) to the drink. Patients with a honey allergy are advised to use sugar;
- if phlegm does not go well, 100 ml of warmed beer is mixed with 100 ml of hot milk, honey or sugar is added to taste;
- with a dry cough, 100 g of butter and a tablespoon of honey are dissolved in 50 ml of warmed beer. The medicine is drunk in one go. As a rule, on the second day, a dry cough turns into a wet one.
For sore throat:
- chop a head of garlic and two lemons in a meat grinder. In 500 ml of warm beer, dissolve 250 g of sugar and add a lemon-garlic mixture to the liquid. The cooled medicine is stored in the refrigerator and taken in a tablespoon 3 times a day, preheated in a water bath. After taking the product, it is imperative to brush your teeth, as it negatively affects the tooth enamel;
- 500 g of lemons and 100 g of horseradish root are ground in a meat grinder. A liter of beer is heated with 2 clove flowers and 500 g of sugar, then all the ingredients are combined. The medicine is stored in the refrigerator and taken one tablespoon 3 times a day (preheated in a water bath);
- in 500 ml of beer add 250 g of sugar, 2 tablespoons of powder from licorice root, 1 teaspoon of dried anise leaves are heated in a water bath for an hour, without bringing to a boil. Then the liquid is poured into the gruel of two lemons, chopped in a meat grinder. The product is stored in the refrigerator and taken warm, 1 tablespoon 3 times a day;
- for sore throat, it is recommended to mix 250 ml of hot beer, 100 ml of sage infusion, honey or sugar to taste. The medicine is drunk in one go.
How to drink warm beer
Heated beer should be treated like medicine. After taking it, you can not go outside and get hypothermic. It is best to consume beer mixes in the evening, just before bed. To enhance the effect, drink the drink in small sips, stretching the intake for 10-15 minutes.
For patients who do not have varicose veins and problems with the cardiovascular system, it is useful to soar their feet in a broth of sage or mustard while taking the medicine. After drinking hot beer, it is best to immediately wrap up warmly and lie down. In order to get rid of a cold in the shortest possible time, they put on warm socks at night, where they first pour a tablespoon of mustard powder.
To treat sore throat with warm beer, heat 150-200 ml of a foamy drink, moisten a napkin with it and put a compress on the throat at night. A warm scarf is put on top.
Homemade beer mulled wine for the prevention of colds
It happens that a person is not yet sick, but feels the whole set of “pre-cold” symptoms: sore throat, coughing, slight chills, aching joints. It makes no sense to take medicine yet, but it is already clear that by tomorrow morning the state of health will worsen.
In such cases, the British, who know a lot about the treatment of colds, offer to drink beer mulled wine at night:
- 600 ml dark beer;
- the peel of one lemon (in order not to filter the finished drink, it is better to take large pieces, and not grated zest);
- a pinch of ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg (proportions to taste);
- 3-4 pcs. carnations;
- 2-4 teaspoons of honey or sugar (to taste).
Recipe: the beer is heated to a temperature of 65–75 ° C, spices, lemon peel, honey are added and for some time they continue to heat over low heat, the drink should not boil. Hot mulled wine is poured into glasses, decorated with lemon slices and cinnamon sticks. Suitable not only for treatment, but also for a festive table.
