Wallpaper guide: how are they different and for which rooms are they suitable?
The easiest way to update the interior is to change the “clothes” for the walls. And if in the cold season many are afraid to tinker with paint, then there are no seasonal barriers for wallpaper.
Paper
They consist of one (simplex) or several layers of paper (duplex), firmly glued to each other. Duplex is easier to glue, since a dense sheet does not soak so much, tears less, and smoothes better. Suitable for country-style interiors.
Important: pay attention to the density of the wallpaper, which is indicated on the label. Usually, paper wallpapers are of three types of density: 110 g / m², from 110 to 140 g / m² and above 140 g / m². It is easiest to glue wallpapers with medium density: dense ones will be heavy and not too elastic, and thin ones will quickly get wet and torn.
Pros: environmental friendliness, price.
Cons: can not be wet, difficult to glue.
Flizelinovye
Non-woven is a paper-like material made from a mixture of natural and chemical fibers. Suitable for wet rooms. The main thing is to remember that there are completely non-woven wallpapers (one- or two-layer), and there are wallpapers on a non-woven basis (the front part of such wallpapers is made of a different material – textiles, acrylic, vinyl). The latter are named after the top decorative layer.
Pros: durability, ease of use.
Cons: dust collects on the embossed structure.
Vinyl
The top side of this wallpaper is covered with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or another polymer, but the base can be different: paper or non-woven. In any case, this wallpaper is suitable for uneven walls.
Important: pay attention to the wallpaper label. If there is one wavy line on it – the wallpaper can be wiped with a damp cloth, if three wavy lines with a brush – the wallpaper can be washed.
Pros: strength, moisture resistance.
Cons: the formation of a fungus is possible, they do not tolerate temperature extremes.
Liquid
In appearance, this is not wallpaper, but powder – silk decorative plaster based on cellulose. The powder becomes plastic after adding water and infusion. Suitable for balconies and unheated rooms. By the type of the main fiber, liquid wallpapers are cellulose, silk, silk-cellulose and cotton.
Important: the more silk is in the composition, the stronger and, accordingly, the more expensive the wallpaper will be.
Pros: easy to apply even on difficult surface areas (corners, niches, protrusions), hypoallergenic, do not attract dust.
Cons: can not be washed.
Textile
Textile threads are fixed on a paper base (or based on a non-woven composite material). Suitable for decorating the main areas of the house. If the wallpaper pattern is presented in the form of a panel, then you need to calculate everything properly: you need to check where and at what height the main elements of the composition will be located.
Pros: beautiful appearance, durability.
Cons: price, can not be wet, difficult to glue.
Wall-papers
Roll wall covering, which is made of a special material – fiberglass. Usually, the outer side of such wallpaper is textured, with a pattern in the form of a herringbone, rhombuses, matting. Sometimes such wallpapers are colored, but more often – for painting. Suitable for minimalist interiors where solid walls are needed.
Pros: environmental friendliness, the ability to choose the texture and color of the room yourself. The durability of fiberglass directly depends on the density of the material of the fiberglass canvas. The most durable wallpapers are considered to be higher than 130 g / sq. m.
Cons: weak texture, difficult to remove.
Acrylic
Acrylic-coated paper wallpaper. Suitable for premises where temporary renovation is required.
Pros: scratches are not visible due to the heterogeneity of the decorative coating, low cost. When buying acrylic wallpaper, you need to look at the unrolled roll in an upright position. Depending on how the light falls, the saturation and color of the texture can change.
Cons: short-lived, can not be washed.
