When to call an ambulance for a COVID-19 patient?

Piotr Dymon, a paramedic with a long experience, admits that already before the pandemic 70 percent. ambulance trips in Poland did not qualify for the definition of a threat to life or health. At the same time, a high percentage of young people currently staying in hospitals are admitted to the ward late – because they ignore the symptoms. So what do we do when we have COVID-19 symptoms?

– I have contracted COVID-19 myself, and I know my symptoms do not increase rapidly as during an asthma attack or other emergency. Coronavirus does not develop in an hour or two, most often it takes several days. At the first symptoms, it is necessary to try to contact a general practitioner, describe the symptoms in detail. It is the doctor who, based on the interview, should decide whether he is treating the patient at home or whether an ambulance should be called – explains Piotr Dymon in an interview with Medonet.

– Very high fever, sometimes associated with chills, shortness of breath that prevents breathing, sharp pain in the chest, loss of consciousness and disturbed consciousness – lists Piotr Dymon.

How to properly call an ambulance to a patient with coronavirus?

Merely a positive COVID-19 test result or symptoms that may indicate a coronavirus infection are not sufficient reasons to call an ambulance. However, if you have more distressing symptoms, call 999 (not 112). In the first place, you should inform the dispatcher that you are infected with COVID-19, as well as about the symptoms of the disease. What else needs to be done?

– The easiest way to describe it is one sentence: answer the dispatcher’s questions and not lie. The key information is that the situation concerns a patient with COVID-19. I know people are generally very upset, but don’t panic. It is important to calmly describe the situation, give the patient’s age, symptoms and their severity. It is also good to say how long these symptoms last and when they first appeared – explains Piotr Dymon.
