The book by journalist Vladimir Gakov is dedicated to the life of the richest people in pre-revolutionary Russia. Having collected information from various sources — from scientific works to memoirs and newspaper articles — and systematizing it, the author describes the life, lifestyle, interests of manufacturers, merchants and entrepreneurs of a century ago, trying to paint a picture of what was happening in Russian business on the eve of the revolution as objectively as possible. This picture would not be complete without a brief history and assessment of the largest fortunes of the country, as well as without a story about patronage. «Building bridges» between the past and today, the author avoids personal assessments, leaving this curious undertaking to the reader.
