Vitaminum C GSK – indications and dosage

Vitaminum C GSK is a drug recommended for supplementing and preventing vitamin C deficiency, as well as supporting iron deficiency and supplementing certain diets.

Dosage

Vitaminum C GSK is in the form of tablets to be taken orally.

A contraindication to taking Vitamin C GSK is an allergy to any of its ingredients.

Vitaminum C GSK – warnings regarding the preparation

  1. Ascorbic acid enhances iron absorption, therefore caution should be exercised in people suffering from sideroblastic anemia, thalassemia or haemochromatosis.
  2. In patients with deficiency of blood glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, long-term use of Vitaminum C GSK may cause haemolytic anemia.
  3. In patients with urolithiasis, significant renal failure, gout or cystinuria, the use of the preparation should be limited.
  4. Vitaminum C GSK should be discontinued at least 1 day before blood, urine and stool laboratory tests are performed (due to the risk of false test results).
  5. Too high doses of vitamin C may affect the results of the measurement of glucose (sugar) in the urine of diabetic patients.
  6. Ascorbic acid, when used in therapeutic doses, may cause false-negative blood measurements in the stool.
  7. Vitamin C GSK should not be used by people with hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency or malabsorption of glucose-galactose.
  8. People on dialysis should absolutely take an extra dose of ascorbic acid.
  9. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before taking the drug.
  10. During pregnancy, it is not recommended to use ascorbic acid in excess of the daily requirement for pregnant women (100 mg per day) due to the risk of avitaminosis in newborns.
  11. Breastfeeding women should exercise caution when taking vitamin C.

Vitaminum C GSK with other drugs

  1. Vitamin C causes increased iron absorption.
  2. Concomitant intake of Vitamin C GSK and deferoxamine increases iron toxicity, especially to the heart muscle (especially in the elderly).
  3. High doses of acetylsalicylic acid reduce the concentration of ascorbic acid in the blood. Ascorbic acid reduces the excretion of acetylsalicylic acid.
  4. Ascorbic acid may increase the toxic effect of sulfonamides, increase the rate of elimination of tricyclic antidepressants and amphetamines, reduce the effectiveness of aminoglycosides, sulfonamides, vitamin B12, and increase the concentration of estrogens in the blood.
  5. Ascorbic acid may alter the effectiveness of disulfiram when used in anti-alcohol therapy.
  6. You should inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, if you need to take ascorbic acid in doses above 1 g per day, because such high doses of the preparation may affect their effect.

Vitaminum C GSK – side effects

  1. High doses of Vitaminum C GSK (more than 1g daily) may cause diarrhea.
  2. Prolonged use of high doses may cause the accumulation of urate and cystine stones, especially in patients with stones in the urinary tract or undergoing hemodialysis.
