Why do children have to take it?
Why do babies need to take vitamin K drops after birth? ~ mom
Vitamin K is involved in the synthesis of blood coagulation factors. Newborns may be deficient in it – vitamin K passes through the placenta to a limited extent; its content in breast milk is also much lower than what the baby needs. These factors can lead to a bleeding disorder – an increased bleeding tendency that can even lead to death (intracranial haemorrhage). Therefore, every child receives vitamin K in the form of an injection immediately after birth, and newborns who are exclusively breastfed in the period from the second week to the third month of life should take preparations of this vitamin in the form of drops. The latter form of supplementation is not necessary in artificially fed children, as the milk replacers intended for them fully cover the need for vitamin K.
