Vitamin D protects against premature death!

The production of vitamin D takes place with the participation of sunlight, but we can partially supplement its level by using supplements. We owe these conclusions to scientists from the University of Copenhagen, who subjected 96 of their compatriots to tests on the level of vitamin D, and then conducted genetic tests.

What other reasons should we take care of the appropriate level of vitamin D?

Deficiency symptoms

The easiest way to recognize vitamin D deficiency is by performing a test. Among the premises that may indicate its low level, there are:

  • rickets,
  • excessive sweating of the skin,
  • obesity – weakened muscles are surrounded by fat,
  • mouth and throat discomfort – bad taste or burning sensation
  • lack of appetite
  • deterioration of vision,
  • insomnia,
  • muscle and bone soreness
  • periodontal diseases,
  • diarrhea.

For strong bones

Thanks to vitamin D, it is possible to keep our bones and teeth in perfect condition for many years, supports the bone marrow cells. While in childhood we suffered from its deficiency, we had skeletal deformities, i.e. a disease called rickets. In adult life, however, we are threatened by softening of the bones – the so-called osteomalacia or adult rickets. Bone tissue is exposed to deformations resulting from loads.

Effect on genes

Almost 5 percent of genes are activated by vitamin D. They have a significant impact on the functioning of the immune system. Thanks to it, the level of T lymphocytes, which are a weapon to fight viruses, and the number of bacteria-limiting proteins increases.

Very often there is a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and low immunity, asthma, Hashimoto’s disease, anxiety neuroses, schizophrenia or depression, neuromuscular conduction, obesity, hypertension or atherosclerosis.

Protection against autoimmune diseases with an optimal level of vitamin D is invaluable. It protects us, among others, against type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Crohn’s disease.

Vitamin D reduces the risk of cancer occurrence and development to such an extent that after four years of taking a daily dose of 1000 IU, we are less exposed to it by as much as 70%. Once cancer is diagnosed, the likelihood of a cure increases. It is particularly important in the prevention of breast, colon and prostate cancer.
