Vitamin D protects against bladder cancer

High levels of vitamin D can prevent the development of bladder cancer, according to researchers from the Spanish National Cancer Research Center, whose conclusions were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The authors of the study – Nuria Malats and Francisco X. Real – believe that supplementation and controlled sun exposure can not only prevent the disease, but also improve the health of patients in whom it has already been diagnosed.

The Spaniards analyzed blood samples taken from over 2 people, including patients diagnosed with bladder cancer. As they emphasize, this is the most comprehensive study conducted so far on the relationship of this type of cancer with the level of the vitamin D metabolite 25 (OH) D3 (25-hydroxyvitamin D3).

The researchers observed the lowest risk of developing bladder cancer in the group of people with the highest concentration of 25 (OH) D3 in their blood. They also found that vitamin D regulates the expression of the FGFR3 protein, which is involved in the process of cancer formation.

Although the conclusions of recent studies show a relationship between vitamin D and risk reduction of other types of cancer, such as breast and colorectal cancer, the molecular mechanism of its action is still unclear. The active form of vitamin D is involved in the regulation of about a thousand genes in the human genome (PAP).
