Research by Japanese scientists, published in the journal “Frontiers in Nutrition”, indicates the effect of vitamin B6 on inflammation in the body. Researchers indicate that pyridoxine may prevent the cytokine storm that occurs in the acute course of COVID-19.

  1. – A cytokine storm is a very strong inflammatory reaction that is triggered at many points in the body. In some COVID-19 patients, it is the cause of death
  2. Vitamin B6 is a known anti-coagulant and anti-inflammatory substance. It is precisely it that protects against a strong inflammatory reaction of the body, argue the authors of the study
  3. – In addition to washing hands and adhering to the principles of physical distance, food and nutrition are one of the first lines of defense against infection with SARS-CoV-2 – writes the author of the study

Vitamin B6 will protect against the cytokine storm in the course of COVID-19?

Japanese scientists in a study published in the journal “Frontiers in Nutrition” highlight the effect of vitamin B6 on inflammation in the body.

Scientists publish papers on the role of diet and nutrients in protection against COVID-19. However, very few researchers have paid attention to the important role of vitamin B6. In addition to washing hands and adhering to the principles of physical distance, food and nutrition are one of the first lines of defense against infection with SARS-CoV-2, writes Thanutchaporn Kumrungsee, a professor at the University of Hiroshima and author of the paper.

The researcher emphasizes that an appropriate diet also plays an important role in supporting the body’s immunity.

– Food is our first medicine and the kitchen is our first pharmacy – adds Thanutchaporn Kumrungsee.

The research of Japanese scientists shows that vitamin B6 inhibits inflammation, reduces oxidative stress and carbonyl stress. Thanks to this, it can protect against cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other chronic diseases.

Japanese scientists link the results of their research on vitamin B6 with its potential impact on the SARS-CoV-2 virus and related ailments.

In COVID-19, both the cytokine storm and thrombosis may be responsible for the severity of the disease, the researchers suggest.

The author of the study, in turn, reminds that vitamin B6 is a known substance with anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant properties.

– Deficiency of this vitamin is associated with decreased immune function and greater susceptibility to infections. Vitamin B6 is therefore closely related to the immune system. Its level always drops in people with chronic inflammation associated with obesity, diabetes and heart disease – adds prof. Kumrungsee.

At the moment, the influence of vitamin B6 on the course of COVID-19 is not yet confirmed – it is necessary to conduct clinical trials. However, you can always start supplementing with B vitamins due to their positive effect on the functioning of the entire human body. Try High Five B-Complex Viridian – a dietary supplement in the form of capsules. We also recommend Vitamin B Complex Health Labs – a complex of B vitamins available in packages of 30 capsules.

Where to find vitamin B6?

Vitamin B6, also called pyroxin, is absorbed into the bloodstream from the digestive system. This means that we deliver it to the body through nutrients. It is then stored in the liver, kidneys, muscles and brain. Small amounts of vitamin B6 can also be synthesized in the intestines, but these are insufficient to cover the entire need for this substance.

The greatest amount of vitamin B6 can be found in brewer’s yeast and wholemeal products (wheat bran, buckwheat or brown rice). Its sources are also: poultry, beef and pork liver, some fish, white beans, soybeans, carrots and bananas.

You can also find vitamin B6 in dietary supplements. We recommend N ° 1 Complex B – a comprehensive set of B vitamins that are very important for the proper functioning of the human body. You can now buy this preparation on Medonet Market at a promotional price. Also try XeniVIT Vitamin B Complex Premium Xenico available in vegan capsules.

Cytokine storm – what is it?

According to Japanese scientists, vitamin B6 may protect against a cytokine storm. Some people with coronavirus, regardless of age, are fatal – not COVID-19 itself.

– A cytokine storm is a very strong inflammatory reaction that is triggered at many points in the body. The virus attaches to the AC2 receptor, that is, to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. This protein is found in many cells in the human body, mainly in vascular endothelial cells and in the lungs. We have a situation where such massive stimulation of the endothelium occurs in many organs, which causes a huge release of cytokine proteins and activation of inflammation – explains Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, an immunologist, in an interview with Medonet.

Vitamin D and COVID-19. Is it worth taking?

Vitamin B6 is not the only one that may affect COVID-19. In September, the results of a study by specialists from the University of Chicago Medicine were published, in which almost 500 people participated. It was then possible to establish that low vitamin D levels were conducive to coronavirus infection.

– Vitamin D is important for the work of the immune system and it has already been shown that supplements containing it reduce the risk of viral respiratory infections. Our statistical analysis suggests that this may also be true for COVID-19, explained Prof. David Meltzer, co-author of the publication.

In the same month, researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine announced that, according to their study, COVID-19 patients suffered from complications significantly less and died if they had sufficient vitamin D levels in their blood.

October brought more research into the effects of vitamin D on COVID-19. At the time, researchers from the University of Birmingham pointed out that lower vitamin D levels could increase susceptibility to the coronavirus.
