Vicalvit D – indications, dosage, contraindications, side effects

Vicalvit D is used in the prevention of osteoporosis and for the prevention of calcium and vitamin deficiencies. D. The preparation is a complex agent containing vitamins and minerals. The medicine is in the form of an effervescent powder or over-the-counter effervescent tablets.

Vicalvit D – indications and dosage

Vicalvit D is recommended for:

  1. in the prevention of osteoporosis,
  2. in treating deficiencies of calcium and vitamin D.

Dosage

  1. Adults and children after the age of 10 1-2 tablets. or sasz./d.
  2. Children 4-10. year of life 1 tablet or sasz./d.

Vicalvit D and contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Vicalvit D are:

  1. allergy to any ingredient of the preparation,
  2. hypercalcemia,
  3. hiperkalciuria,
  4. severe kidney failure,
  5. kidney stones,
  6. fenyloketonuria,
  7. for use by children up to 4 years of age.

Vicalvit D – warnings

  1. During long-term administration of Vicalvit D (especially in elderly patients treated with digitalis glycosides or diuretics), blood calcium levels and kidney function (blood creatinine levels) should be monitored.
  2. Patients with a tendency to build up of mineral deposits in the urinary tract, in addition to monitoring kidney function, are advised to drink more fluids.
  3. In the event of hypercalcaemia or renal dysfunction, the dose should be reduced or treatment discontinued.
  4. Medicines should be used with caution only under strict medical supervision in people with impaired kidney function, in patients with sarcoidosis or diabetes; blood and urine calcium and phosphate levels should be monitored.
  5. Patients with severe renal impairment should receive forms of vitamin D other than calciferol.
  6. Extra doses of vitamin D and calcium should not be taken without consulting your doctor and monitoring your blood and urine calcium levels.
  7. Vicalvit D should be used with caution in patients with arterial hypertension.
  8. The preparation may be harmful to patients with phenylketonuria, because it contains aspartame.
  9. The drug in powder form contains sucrose, so this should be taken into account in the case of diabetes. Patients with hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency should not use the preparation in this form.
  10. Vicalvit Dnie is intended for use in children and adolescents.
  11. In pregnant women, Vicalvit D may only be administered in cases of calcium and vitamin D deficiency and only after consulting a doctor. It is recommended to avoid overdosing with vitamin D.
  12. Breast-feeding women should consult a doctor before taking the drug.

Vicalvit D and other substances

  1. The absorption of calcium salts from the gastrointestinal tract is reduced by chronic corticosteroids, excess lipid compounds in food, phytates (found in whole grain cereal products), oxalates (oxalic acid is found in e.g. spinach and rhubarb), phosphates, alcohol and smoking.
  2. Orally administered calcium compounds reduce the absorption of tetracyclines. Tetracyclines should be taken at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after calcium intake. Vicalvit Reduces the absorption of: iron, bisphosphonates and fluoride compounds (including fluoroquinolones) and anticoagulants (warfarin derivatives).
  3. The use of Vicalvit D with thiazide diuretics increases the risk of hypercalcaemia. Blood calcium levels should be checked regularly.
  4. Furosemide and other loop diuretics increase the excretion of calcium in the urine.
  5. Vicalvit D may reduce the effect of verapamil and other calcium antagonists and increase the toxic effects of digitalis glycosides; regular ECG testing is recommended. If it is necessary to use the above-mentioned drugs, a 3-hour interval should be left between their administration and the use of the preparation.
  6. Cholestyramine, laxatives (such as paraffin oil) may reduce the absorption of vitamin D.
  7. Phenytoin or barbiturates reduce the effect of vitamin D3.
  8. Taking antacids containing aluminum or magnesium may lead to an increase in the levels of aluminum (and increased bone toxicity) or magnesium in the blood.

Vicalvit D – side effects

While taking Vicalvit D, you may experience:

  1. gastrointestinal disturbances in the form of constipation, flatulence, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea,
  2. hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria,
  3. rare: itching, rash, urticaria.
