Vestibo is a drug intended primarily for patients suffering from Meniere’s disease, i.e. a disease of the inner ear, which can manifest itself, inter alia, with tinnitus, as well as headaches and dizziness. Vestibo is available in the form of tablets and can be purchased at a pharmacy upon presentation of a valid prescription.
What is the composition of Vestibo?
The active substance in Vestibo is betahistine dihydrochloride. One tablet contains 8, 16 or 24 mg of this substance. In addition, the drug also contains auxiliary ingredients, including lactose monohydrate, so it should not be taken by people allergic to lactose.
Vestibo – action
Betahistine dihydrochloride is primarily agonist at histamine H1 receptors, which are found in peripheral blood vessels. In this way, the substance directly affects the blood circulation of the inner ear and can therefore eliminate vertigo. In addition, betahistine affects the neurons of the vestibular nucleus and increases the permeability of the pulmonary epithelium.
Vestibo – indications for use
The most important indication for the use of Vestibo is Meniere’s disease. It is a specific labyrinth disease, in which tinnitus, headaches, dizziness, nausea, and even loss of hearing may occur.
Vestibo – contraindications
The main contraindications to the use of Vestibo are hypersensitivity to its active substance, as well as to any of the excipients. In addition, betahistine should not be taken by people with phaeochromocytoma. As a result of the action of betahistine, the tumor may release catecholamines, which can lead to severe hypertension.
Vestibo – it is worth being careful about
There are some precautions you should take when taking Vestibo. People with rash, urticaria, allergic rhinitis, as well as bronchial asthma should be especially careful. Particular caution should be exercised in patients who have or previously had peptic ulcers. The active ingredient of the drug may cause indigestion in them. The drug should not be used by people with hereditary galactose intolerance, malabsorption of glucose-galactose, and lactase deficiency. In addition, Vestibo is also not intended for children and adolescents under the age of eighteen. The preparation should also not be used by pregnant women and women during breastfeeding. As the drug may cause drowsiness, it is not recommended to drive or operate machinery at this time.
Vestibo – interactions with other drugs
The effect of betahistine may be increased when used together with salbutamol. Although no exact interactions with antihistamines have been identified, it is very possible that there will be one. However, you should not combine betahistine with ethanol and pyrimethamine with dapsone.
Vestibo – possible side effects
As with almost every drug, taking Vestibo may also have some side effects. The most common are those related to the digestive system. Some patients may develop nausea and indigestion. Sometimes a variety of skin ailments are also visible, such as hives, itching, skin rashes and palpitations. Occasional drowsiness and headaches also appear. If you experience any side effects while using the drug, contact your doctor immediately.
Vestibo – how to dose Vestibo?
The drug is taken during a meal. Usually the exact dose will be determined by your doctor, but it is recommended to start with 8-16 mg tablets three times a day. Tablets of 12-24 mg twice daily are usually prescribed as a maintenance dose.
