Choosing an assortment of plants for decorating a plot, gardeners prefer not only specimens that have a beautiful appearance, but also undemanding growing conditions. These are the types of loosestrife, the care of which does not require special knowledge and a lot of time. Lily-of-the-valley or cage-shaped loosestrife is a bright representative of this family, widespread in the south of Primorye.

A fairly tall perennial plant, capable of growing up to 1 m. It has a straight, pubescent stem, densely covered with lanceolate leaves with pointed ends. On the upper side, they are dark green, and on the lower side, they have a bluish tint and are slightly pubescent. The roots of loosestrife are light pink, in appearance they resemble the roots of lily of the valley, only more powerful.

The main feature of the plant is a snow-white inflorescence, which has a bizarre curved shape, because of which it is popularly called “gooseneck”.

At the top of the shoots, there are many tiny flowers, collected in dense pyramidal inflorescences, the length of which reaches 20 cm.The flowering period begins at the end of July and lasts 15-20 days. The homeland of the plant is considered to be the northeast of China; it has been cultivated in culture since the end of the last century.

Planting and caring for lily of the valley loosestrife

Reproduction of loosestrife is possible by seeds or vegetatively by dividing the roots. The optimal time for sowing seeds is autumn, in this case the plant will please with flowering only 2 years after planting. To speed up this process, it is better to use a vegetative propagation method, in which plant roots are used as planting material, cut into several parts.

When choosing a place for planting, it is necessary to give preference to shaded areas with highly moist soil. This is one of the key conditions for growing loosestrife, since in nature the plant prefers the shores of water bodies and marshlands.

Planting can be done directly in open ground. The verbeynik takes root well and grows quickly. It belongs to those crops that are able to grow on their own, requiring watering only in dry times. Top dressing is done only if the soil is very depleted. Caring for loosestrife in the fall consists in pruning all the stems, digging in the soil and introducing humus.

The lily of the valley grows very intensively and can live in one place for up to 10 years. It is often used in group plantings to decorate parks and home gardens. In addition, it also has medicinal properties.
