Veneers – a way to make a star smile?

Veneers are the most popular smile metamorphosis among celebrities. Are they safe? What does their durability depend on? For whom should they be banned? We ask Dr. Iwona Gnach-Olejniczak, a dentist.

– Once you decide to use porcelain veneers, you will wear them for the rest of your life – says Dr. Iwona Gnach-Olejniczak. The celebrity dentist (including Natalia Siwiec’s dentist) explains that in order to make a veneer, about 0.5 mm of the enamel must be removed. It’s not much, but the body will not restore such an enamel layer. In the future, you will be able to change veneers, but you will not be able to give them up. Why do celebrities make such a “serious” decision and put on porcelain veneers? – Not only celebrities, but many patients just want a perfect smile, without gaps between the teeth, without discoloration, enamel irregularities, chipping. They dream of harmonious teeth that match the features of the entire face, explains Dr. Gnach-Olejniczak. According to an expert in dentistry, only porcelain most closely imitates natural teeth. – This material absorbs and reflects light like a real tooth – he emphasizes. Porcelain is also durable (8-15 years), does not discolor and does not absorb food dyes.

Teeth have sex

The shape of the teeth can add femininity or masculinity. That is why doctors take facial features into account when designing veneers. – There are patients who like diastema and those who take away their beauty. Full lips and southern facial features make it possible to design fuller and larger veneers, with a narrow mouth and a fine face, we cannot afford something like that – explains the expert. A smile full of sex appeal is guaranteed by female “ones”, which should be slightly longer and larger, like for example Claudia Schiffer. – This is a very feminine feature, which is additionally emphasized by the discreet protrusion of the outer edges of the ones – says Dr. Iwona Gnach-Olejniczak, author of the smile of Karolina Malinowska. Female teeth most often resemble almonds, are slightly narrower at the gums and have rounded edges. Male teeth, on the other hand, are more square and massive in shape. But this is just a generalization! – The shape of the veneers is adjusted to the oval of the face, body type, and even personality – explains the dentist.

Not for everyone

Porcelain veneers are not for you if you are grinding your teeth and have symptoms of bruxism. Why? It’s simple, porcelain petals just won’t stick! Just as you break your natural teeth, you will also want to rub your teeth covered with veneers. – Applying veneers in patients with in-depth recording is even a mistake in art – says Dr. Iwona Gnach-Olejniczak. – Such veneers are not durable, they fall off under pressure, crumble and even destroy the adjacent teeth in the bite – he adds. If you grind, you must first eliminate the cause of the bruxism. You are likely to have an orthodontic appliance fitted to treat bruxism. During ortho-therapy, the doctor will recreate the correct shapes of the teeth using a composite. After completing orthodontic treatment, he will replace the bonding with porcelain veneers.

What does the application of veneers look like?

Before that, you need to heal your teeth, and if you want to brighten the whole smile – also whiten it. During the first visit, impressions are made. The cast models simulate the appearance of a new smile, i.e. wax-up (the doctor selects the color and shape of the teeth). A model of a new smile, the so-called You try the mock-up on the second visit, without grinding your teeth. You leave the office with her and for a few days you may wonder if the metamorphosis suits you. If you have any remarks, the doctor will correct the shapes at the next visit and work on the final veneers will begin. Under local anesthesia, a small amount of enamel is removed (no more than half a millimeter), and porcelain veneers are made in the prosthetic laboratory. During the time needed for their implementation, the patient’s teeth are secured with temporary veneers. When the final ones are ready, the dentist cements the porcelain overlays at the last visit.

Do veneers require special treatment?

Avoid extreme temperatures for several hours after applying the veneers, as a temporary sensitivity to heat and cold may appear. Hygienic recommendations are standard – veneers, just like your own teeth, are washed with paste and a soft brush twice a day. The holder of veneers, just like every patient, should normally report for control visits twice a year and systematically remove limescale and deposits in the dentist’s office. This way, it will keep a perfect smile for years.
