Farmers and meat lobbyists accuse plant food producers of “cultural takeover.”
The terms “veggie burger” and “veggie sausage” may be banned in accordance with the proposals submitted to the European Parliament for voting. Their fate will have to be decided next week.
They also want to ban terms such as “yoghurt” and “cheesy” for plant-based alternatives to dairy products.
Sales of these products are growing rapidly, but meat farmers and lobbyists say the terms are misleading and represent a “cultural takeover” of the meat industry.
Opponents, backed by major food companies including Unilever and Nestlé, say claims of consumer confusion are laughable. They say the ban would also run counter to the EU’s desire to help consumers choose more environmentally friendly food and reduce climate-warming emissions.
Let us remind you that earlier we told about an unusual ice cream made from meat that appeared in Belarus, and also, together with our readers, we were surprised at how few people, once becoming vegetarians, remain them.
