Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) – when to test, norms

Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide is produced by the cells of the gastrointestinal mucosa. It stimulates the secretory and motor activity of the stomach and intestines, as well as the secretion of pancreatic juice and bile.

When do we do?

1. Suspicion of Verner-Morrison syndrome (VIP) in the course of a gastrointestinal endocrine tumor.

2. Differentiation of chronic diarrhea and electrolyte disturbances.

Test material: serum.

Preparation for the test: on an empty stomach (at least 8 hours).

The course of the study: one-time blood sampling from a vein in the arm.

Time to wait for the result: 1 Day.

Standard: 20-53 ng/l.

Comments: One of the hormones responsible for the proper functioning of the digestive tract. VIP-producing tumors can also secrete gastrin, pancreatic polypeptide, and neurotensin.
