Varieties of daffodils: names, description

The graceful daffodil flower shyly tilts its head down, as if trying to protect itself from intrusive glances. Translucent perianth petals border the crown in the center, like the iris of the eye pupil. No wonder the name “narcissus” is translated from Persian as “beautiful eye”. Over the millennia of cultivation, many varieties of flowers have been bred, and its species are systematized into groups.

New varieties of daffodils appear every year, but even its natural varieties are beautiful.

The Royal Horticultural Society of Great Britain is registering all existing varieties of daffodils. According to him, there are thirteen groups of daffodils.

In the accepted classification, only 1 group is assigned to a variety of wild forms of daffodils

Garden varieties are divided into twelve groups according to external characteristics – color and shape of inflorescences, stem height, etc. Their names differ slightly in different sources due to the peculiarities of translation from English.

Here is a brief description of the groups of garden daffodils with a mention of popular varieties:

  • Tubular – the length of the bell of the crown is greater than or equal to the length of the petals, varieties: “Mount Hood”, “Spelbinder”, “Waist”;
  • Large-crowned – the bell of the crown is more than 1/3 of the length of the petals, varieties: “Carlton”, “Karelia”, “Prekokus”, “Taurus”;
  • Small-crowned – the bell of the crown is less than 2/3 of the length of the petals: “Burma”, “Baret”, “Browning”;
  • Terry – varieties with double flowers: “Akropolis”, “Ice King”, “Obdam”, “Crackington”, “Pink Champagne”, “Rosie Cloud”;
  • Triandrus – small plants, on a peduncle of several flowers, collected in an umbrella inflorescence, varieties: “Trisamble”, “Havera”, “Winx”;
  • Cyclamen-shaped – flowers with strongly bent back petals and a long crown, varieties “Jetfaye”, “Jenny”, “Piping Tom”;
  • Jonquillia – small flowers with a very strong aroma, growing in 2 or 3 pieces on a peduncle, varieties: “Baby Moon”, “Pipit”, “Suzy”;
  • Multiflorous, thermophilic, on the peduncle grows up to 12 fragrant flowers of medium size, the popular variety “Geranium”;
  • Poetic – single white flowers with a short crown, do not like frequent transplants, the famous Akted variety;
  • Bulbocodium hybrids – a thermophilic variety, a large bell-shaped crown, surrounded by small, pointed petals, which are almost invisible;
  • Split-crown – the crown is divided into several parts, varieties: “Printay”, “Marie Jose Palmares”, “Orangerie”;
  • Others – varieties that do not fit the listed groups in terms of external characteristics;
  • Species or natural varieties.

It is impossible to remember all the names of the varieties of daffodils, there are about 30 thousand of them.

Many varieties differ not only in appearance, but also in frost resistance, flowering period. Planting daffodils, you fall in love with these flowers, discovering an amazing variety of new varieties.
