The ointment also includes auxiliary substances such as thymol, cedar oil and white petroleum jelly. Vaporub ointment is applied to the chest and back, and due to the volatile nature of the active substances of the product, it is simultaneously applied to the respiratory tract when applied to the skin. The appropriate amount of ointment should be rubbed into the skin of the chest and back 2 to 3 times a day. For adults and children over 12 years of age, about 1 teaspoon of the ointment should be used 2 to 4 times a day, while for children from 5 to 12 years of age, about half a teaspoon of Vaporub 2 to 3 times a day. The ointment should not be used in children under 5 years of age. After using Vaporub, use airy clothes to facilitate inhalation through the volatile components of the ointment rubbed into the skin of the chest or back. Another component of Vaporub, levomenthol, alleviates the symptoms of colds by inhalation, acts locally, dilates blood vessels, gives a feeling of coolness and has an anesthetic effect. Vaporub ointment should not be used in people who are hypersensitive to the active substances or any other substance in the ointment. Vaporub should also not be used in people with active bronchial asthma or other respiratory diseases. Vaporub ointment can be used regardless of the stage of colds and the first visible effects of nasal patency are visible already after 1 minute after application. Relief of symptoms of rhinitis and cough may last up to 8 hours. The ointment should be treated as a supplement to therapy, using it as an addition to drugs taken orally.

Side effects that may occur after using Vaporub ointment can be divided according to their type. The first group of adverse effects are local reactions such as redness, skin irritation, eye irritation, allergic dermatitis and contact burns. Irritation and allergic reactions are quite rare or are usually very mild, and if they occur, discontinue use of the product and remove any residues from the skin. Another group are systemic reactions that result from drug overdose and their occurrence is unlikely. Improper use of the drug may be associated with acute poisoning, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, hot flush, convulsions and even coma. If any side effects appear after using Vaporub ointment, stop using the medicine, remove the ointment from the skin immediately and consult a doctor.
