“Vaccines are not made from aborted fetuses.” The virologist comments on the doubts of the Polish Episcopate

– The production of AstraZeneki and Johnson & Johnson vaccines uses cell lines created on biological material collected from aborted fetuses. This raises moral objection, said Bishop Józef Wróbel, chairman of the Team of Experts of the Polish Bishops’ Conference for Bioethics, on Wednesday. The words of the bishop for MedTvoiLokony are commented on by virologist Dr. Tomasz Dzieiątkowski: – If any of the priests come up with a way to be able to effectively multiply all human viruses in a different way than the present way, please contact me and give specific suggestions – says Dzieiątkowski.

  3. The Polish Episcopate again wants to be more holy than the Pope himself – assesses this position by Dr. Tomasz Dzieiątkowski – microbiologist and virologist from the Chair and Department of Medical Microbiology of the Medical University of Warsaw

“AstraZeneki and Johnson & Johnson vaccines raise moral objection”

On Wednesday, Bishop Józef Wróbel, chairman of the Team of Experts of the Polish Bishops’ Conference on Bioethics, presented his position on the use of AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines against COVID-19.

Bishop Wróbel emphasized that, unlike vaccines using mRNA-based technology and raising no significant moral objections, the production of AstraZeneki and Johnson & Johnson vaccines uses cell lines created on biological material collected from aborted fetuses.

“This fact raises serious moral objection, because in this case cells from aborted fetuses are the necessary link in the technology of producing these vaccines” – announced the bishop, adding that those faithful who do not have the option of choosing another vaccine can use AstraZeneki and J&J.

Cell lines – what are they needed for?

Adrian Dąbek, MedTvoiLokony: Experts of the Polish Bishops’ Conference on Bioethics concluded that the production technology of AstraZeneki and Johnson & Johnson vaccines raises serious moral objection because they come from aborted fetuses. How do you comment on this?

Dr hab. Tomasz Dzieiątkowski: It must be clearly said that the Polish Episcopate once again wants to be more holy than the Pope himself. In December last year, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a note approved by Pope Francis, which during the pandemic allows the use of vaccines produced with the use of cell lines obtained as a result of an abortion in the 60s. The matter is simple: “Roma locuta causa finita”, or the statement of the head of the Church is binding on the faithful. If someone is questioning the line of the Holy See at this point, he should perhaps reflect a little or possibly change the religion.

What are cell lines?

Cell lines are clones of cells that are grown in vitro and are essential for the multiplication of all viruses. On the other hand, some viruses, whether they be vaccine viruses or viruses that will be used as vectors in vaccines, have such a sad trait that, despite the fact and prayers to whomever they pray to, they do not want to multiply in non-human cells. Therefore, it must be clearly emphasized that the use of these cell lines is not a whim of researchers, scientists or producers, but a painful necessity. If any of the priests come up with a way to be able to multiply all human viruses effectively in a different way, please contact me and give specific suggestions.

Vaccines are not made from aborted fetuses

How much poorer we would be if it weren’t for these cell lines?

About everything. The truth is that if we didn’t experiment and experiment on human or animal cell lines, all pharmacology and virology would not really exist. The first step in all preclinical tests is to check on cell lines whether a given substance or a biologically active compound is toxic to them. Without it, we don’t move any further.

If we want to learn about the biology of a given virus, we have to make use of cell lines. This is not our invention – working with cell lines is hard, thankless, not easy things at all. I really want some other invention that would help in this matter. Unfortunately, some viruses refuse to cooperate and refuse to multiply in non-human lines.

  1. Will the doctor decide not to vaccinate the patient with AstraZeneca?

However, I must ask this question directly. Are vaccines made from aborted fetuses?

Not. It needs to be emphasized – vaccines are not made from aborted fetuses. Certain vaccine viruses or viruses serving as vectors are at best multiplied in cell lines that were derived from aborted fetuses half a century ago. Since then, abortions have certainly occurred, but there is no need to extract new cells or to intentionally abort the fetuses to lead these cell lines, because they already exist.

As far as I recall, these abortions from the 60s were not performed for medical reasons. These starting cell lines rest deep freeze in liquid nitrogen vapor, and a commercial or research laboratory that needs such lines asks a tissue bank for a line sample. He gets such cells and grows them himself under laboratory conditions. Nobody does it for fun, and then neither does it. Of course, there was a different provision back then, and in most cases these lines were collected either in the United States or in England or Sweden.
