A few weeks ago, the World Health Organization recommended that pregnant women could be vaccinated against COVID-19 with mRNA preparations. Now, similar recommendations are to be announced by the Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians. – We recommend vaccinating pregnant women against COVID-19, it is also a gruesome disease in them – said prof. Mariusz Zimmer, head of PTGiP.
- For a long time, the World Health Organization has not recommended the use of COVID-19 vaccines on pregnant women. At the end of January, the position of WHO changed
- Polish experts are also of the opinion that the benefits of vaccination are greater than the risk of developing the disease and the severe course of the disease
- Analyzing all the pros and cons, we strongly recommend vaccinating pregnant women against COVID-19 after medical verification – emphasized prof. Mariusz Zimmer, obstetrician and head of the Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians

Vaccination against COVID-19 in pregnancy: the benefits outweigh the risks
Head of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic of the University Teaching Hospital in Wrocław and head of the Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians, prof. Mariusz Zimmer assessed that the benefits of vaccinating pregnant women far outweigh the dangers and risks of developing the disease and the possibility of a severe course of the disease.
– COVID-19 in pregnant women is an equally severe, gruesome disease. So when asked if we vaccinate, we answer: yes. The second question is what are the criteria and contraindications for pregnant women. It is mainly about the so-called thrombotic disease – said prof. Zimmer.
He added that the Polish Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians under his leadership would announce a position on this matter in the coming days and include guidelines and recommendations on the vaccination of pregnant women.
- Vaccinations against COVID-19 and pregnancy. WHO changes its position
– After our more than one year of observations and experiences, it appears that COVID is mainly occupied by two areas in the body. This is a pulmonary area that is mostly life threatening because it leads to respiratory failure. And the second area of blood clotting that leads to thrombosis, blood clots. And we are afraid of this also in pregnant women – said prof. Zimmer.
Pregnancy and blood coagulability
Zimmer explained that pregnancy is a condition that in itself causes blood to clot.
– Therefore, the introduction of another factor, which may also be a factor increasing coagulation, must be very carefully treated. But I would like to emphasize once again: the risk of developing the disease is definitely worse than possibly one in a million cases of post-thrombotic complications in the case of some vaccinations, and not all vaccines – said the expert.
- Thrombosis. How is it related to COVID-19 and the AstraZeneki vaccine? The doctor explains
– Therefore, analyzing all the pros and cons, we strongly recommend, after medical verification, vaccinating pregnant women against COVID-19 – emphasized prof. Zimmer.
He added that it is recommended to vaccinate pregnant women after the 16th week of pregnancy, i.e. after the end of organogenesis – the process of formation and development of organs during embryonic and larval development.
Vaccinations against COVID-19 in pregnant women: recommended mRNA vaccines
– Within a few months of the emergence of vaccines, it is difficult to talk about the experience of pregnant women, because these studies were not available. We rely on observational research, so here we introduce the so-called logic and general medical knowledge. All medical activities during pregnancy are more recommended after organogenesis, i.e. after 16 weeks of pregnancy – said the doctor.
He added that in order to minimize the risk of thrombosis, specialists will recommend vaccines based on mRNA technology.
- Pregnant doctor vaccinated against COVID-19. “I was not afraid”
– for pregnant women, they are the most appropriate, which does not mean that the other vaccines have proven side effects. No, but if we have a choice of two types of vaccines, the first group is definitely safer for pregnant women – summed up the expert.
