Is it safe to use Duphaston in pregnancy? Is the drug helpful during pregnancy? Will Duphaston harm the baby? Does the drug have any side effects? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
Can Duphaston have a negative effect on pregnancy?
Hello, I’m 31 years old and currently pregnant. I had some unexpected spotting recently, so I went to the gynecologist who said everything was fine but told me to use the drug Duphaston for spotting in pregnancy. During the visit, I was very nervous, so I didn’t ask about everything I wanted. First of all, I mean whether use of Duphaston during pregnancy is it safe? I used to take Duphaston for period induction and then it did for me, but now the problem is completely different.
Will Duphaston harm the baby? Will using Duphaston really help while pregnant? I am also interested if there are any side effects of Duphaston in pregnancybecause I’m a little worried that it might hurt me. I am very nervous about my health and most of all, so I would be very grateful for clarifying the issues related to the use of Duphaston during pregnancy, because the next visit to the gynecologist is only a dozen or so days later, and I am nervous and afraid of a negative the effects of Duphaston on pregnancy.
The doctor explains the safety of Duphaston
Duphaston, or dydrogesterone, is a drug that is safe to use during pregnancy. It is an analogue of progesterone, a hormone produced naturally by the corpus luteum in the second phase of the cycle and by the placenta, and helps maintain pregnancy. This drug is a synthetically produced progestogen with a multidirectional action similar to that of progesterone. Progesterone is a hormone present practically throughout life and its insufficient concentration can cause various diseases – both during pregnancy and outside of it. It is estimated that dydrogesterone has so far been used in over 10 million pregnancies, and so far it has not been reported to have a negative effect on the course of pregnancy or on the fetus.
According to the SmPC, i.e. the summary of product characteristics for Duphaston, the indications for the use of the drug are as follows: menstrual cycles, treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding, treatment of premenstrual syndrome, treatment of threatening and habitual abortions associated with established progesterone deficiency, treatment of infertility associated with luteal insufficiency.
In the event of any alarming symptoms, the gynecologist responsible for the pregnancy should be immediately contacted.
