If you’re working with large Word documents and don’t want to link to the main document or multiple files, you can use bookmarks to navigate to specific places in the document.
Inserting a bookmark in Word is like putting a bookmark between the pages of a book to remember the right place. Bookmarks in Word are codes that are inserted into your document, they are invisible (until you make them visible) and are not printed.
To insert a bookmark at a specific location in your document, place the cursor on that location and open the tab Insertion (Inset) on the Ribbon.
You can also highlight text where you want to insert a bookmark.
On the Advanced tab Insertion (insert) in section Links (Links) click Bookmark (Bookmark).
In the dialog box Bookmark (Bookmark) enter a name for the bookmark in the input box below the words Bookmark name (Bookmark name) and click Add (Add).
Use descriptive names for your bookmarks so you can understand what text is behind each bookmark. In our example, we use Bookmark1, but that’s not the best name for a bookmark.
Bookmarks are not visible by default. To make all bookmarks visible in your document, go to the tab Fillet (File) and open Options (Options).
If you are working in Word 2007, then click the button Office and then Word Options (Word Options) at the bottom of the menu Office.
In the dialog box Word Options (Word Options) tab Advanced (Optional) in the list on the left. Scroll down to the section Show document content (Show document content) and check the box Show bookmarks (Show bookmarks). Click OKto save your changes and close the dialog box.
If you mark the place to insert a bookmark with the cursor, the bookmark will be displayed with an icon in the form of an I-beam, as shown in the figure below.
If a section of text has been selected to insert a bookmark, the selected text will be enclosed in square brackets indicating the location of the bookmark.
Bookmark square brackets are handy if you need to change the text or other content included in the bookmark without deleting it.
To navigate to a bookmark, you can use the same dialog box as for inserting a bookmark. As described earlier in this article, open the dialog box Bookmark (Bookmark) on the tab Insertion (Insert). Select the desired bookmark from the list and click Go To (Jump). Button Cancel (Cancel) turns into a button Fermer (Close), by clicking on which you can close the dialog box Bookmark (Bookmark).
You can navigate to bookmarks using the dialog box Find and Replace (Find and replace). To use this method, open the tab Home (Home) and click the dropdown arrow Find (Find) in a group of commands Editing (Editing).
Выберите Go To (Go) to open the dialog Find and Replace (Find and Replace) with active tab Go To (Jump). Listed Go to what (Jump object) specify Bookmark (Bookmark) and in the dropdown list Enter bookmark name (Enter bookmark name) Select the desired bookmark. Click Go To (Jump). After moving to the bookmark location, the dialog box Find and Replace (Find and Replace) remains open. Click Fermer (Close) to close the dialog box.
You can add bookmarks to different parts of your document to make it easier and faster to navigate to them. Bookmark characters are not printed, so you can safely add them for headings, pictures, paragraphs, and even items such as imported objects and audio files.
