In very ancient times, a rumor spread among the tribes of Gorny Altai that a strange monster of snow and ice appeared in the Altai forests – Bigfoot, who for some reason was called the White Ear, probably due to the fact that one ear he had whiter than snow. The leader of one heard about the Bigfoot and, in order to become famous among the other leaders, decided to take possession of the monster. Dozens of heroes rushed to find this mysterious creature. For a long time hunters caught White Ear. Then, seeing that they could not take the Bigfoot alive, the heroes killed him, hoping that they would receive a reward for the dead. Bigfoot fell to the ground, exposing a dazzling white ear to the sun’s rays. The heroes came to take him away, but, no matter how powerful they were, and they could not lift the monster, they had to return empty-handed. In the place where the White Ear fell, a high mountain rose. Its top is always covered with snow and sticks out like an ear. The country of White Waters was open only to virtuous people, and according to various versions, it was located in the Far North, Siberia, the Urals, and also in Altai, where Old Believers settled in the XNUMXth century. At the moment, it is believed that the real prototype of the magical land was the Bukhtarma region (among the people – the Stone) in Altai: it was there that the Old Believers lived, who left to the east after the persecution of Patriarch Nikon. The place where the so-called “masons” lived was called Belovodye.

How did the Old Believers live?

The history of Russian peasants-Old Believers is one of the most interesting pages of the past of Altai. In Altai, Old Believers have mastered large territories, formed whole villages. For almost two generations, they managed to adapt to large temperature extremes, fleeting summers and long winters, seasonal floods of the Katun and other rivers. Gradually, the most reliable methods of the master’s attitude to the surrounding world were selected. The Old Believers lived in solid, warm, well-lit houses with glazed windows. The inside of the house was clean and tidy. The walls were painted with intricate patterns and bright colors. The floors were covered with woven rugs and felt. Forged chests stood along the walls, and beautiful embroidered bedspreads lay on the beds. But the most cozy and warm place in the house was, of course, the stove. Above its canopy, beds were placed on which children slept. The place opposite the mouth of the furnace was occupied by the hostess. There were comfortable cupboards and kitchen utensils.
