Empty injections instead of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine

Employees at a Kroger clinic in Virginia mistakenly gave patients empty injections instead of a COVID-19 vaccine. The network of American supermarkets has its own clinics where citizens are vaccinated against the coronavirus.

A spokesman for the network said the situation concerned a small number of patients at The Little Clinic in Midlothian (near Richmond). The facility serves Johnson & Johnson vaccines that have just been approved for use in the European Union.

The error occurred because clinic staff believed there was a vaccine in the syringes provided by Johnson & Johnson. In fact, the preparation is stored separately and must be drawn into a syringe prior to puncture. Nine patients received the empty vaccine.

“ We’ve already contacted all of these customers and have already received their COVID-19 vaccines, ” said company representative Allison McGee in a statement. – We thank these customers for their understanding. We apologized to them for the inconvenience.

Carrie Hawes was one of eight patients to receive an empty injection on Monday in place of the COVID-19 vaccine. The network quickly phoned her to inform her of the mistake, and two hours later Hawes was on the correct medication.

– They showed me the vial so I could make sure it was Johnson & Johnson. Then they took out the vaccine and showed it to me again, Hawes told CNN.

Almost a million COVID-19 vaccines have already been administered on the Kroger network. The company’s goal is to expand supplies and vaccinate one million patients each week.
