A high-profile medical investigation in the United States continued for several months. Its aim was to find out where the dangerous bacterium that does not exist in the USA came from in the body of the deceased 5-year-old boy. As it turned out, its source was a home fragrance spray imported from India.

Lavender fragrance spray was supposed to give rooms a beautiful fragrance. Instead, it contributed to the deaths of two people and the serious illness of several others. It turned out that the product that went to the popular American supermarket chain Walmart came from India and was contaminated with a very dangerous bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei.

Lavender fragrance spray killed two people. How it’s possible? All because of the bacteria
The tragic events took place in July 2021, but only now the painstaking and difficult medical investigation gave the final results. A 5-year-old boy from Georgia (USA) was hospitalized with serious symptoms. He was vomiting, feeling weak and complaining of a sore throat. His heart rate was significantly elevated. In addition, he had a very high fever and breathing problems. He was tested for COVID-19. The boy tested positive and was treated like a typical viral infection. He was given, inter alia, remdesivir — a drug commonly used in coronavirus infections. However, this treatment did not bring results, and the 5-year-old died four days after being admitted to the hospital.
An autopsy revealed that the boy had a coronavirus in his lungs and upper respiratory system. But that’s not all. A bacterium called Burkholderia pseudomallei was also detected in the body of the deceased. It was in the boy’s lungs, liver, spleen, and even the boy’s brain.

As a result of the investigation, it turned out that there were more similar cases throughout the United States. The bacterium was detected in a total of three more people, one of which also died (this time it was an adult). The researchers did not hide their surprise, because the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei is practically absent in the USA. In addition, it is difficult to diagnose and its symptoms can easily be confused with a variety of respiratory infections, including COVID-19. However, early detection and treatment give good prognosis.
Only after several months of painstaking investigation, it was discovered that the source of the dangerous bacteria was a lavender fragrance spray from a popular supermarket. The product was imported from India. The spray was quickly withdrawn from sale.
