A urologist is a doctor who deals with diseases of the urinary system in men, women and children. A urologist diagnoses and treats congenital and acquired penile defects, testicular and prostate diseases, and kidney and bladder diseases. The urologist has extensive competences. Many people may be ashamed of visiting a urology office, as it concerns intimate and embarrassing areas of the body.
Urologist – what does he do?
The main task of a urologist is the diagnosis and treatment of all diseases of the genitourinary system in men and women. He specializes in diseases of the male genital organs, but he also treats diseases of the kidneys and other organs of the urinary system in men and women. A pediatric urologist is a doctor who treats the same conditions as adults, but only in children. A urologist deals with the treatment of various diseases, more or less complicated. However, these are cases that are beyond the competence of the family doctor.

Urologist – what heals?
The competences of aurologist include the treatment of diseases of the genitourinary system. In men, these are mainly diseases related to the external elements of the genital system, such as:
- testicular hydrocele, which is the increased accumulation of serous fluid in the testicular sheaths. Is treated with surgery or surgery;
- phimosis, or narrowing of the mouth of the foreskin; is treated surgically by incision or removal of the foreskin;
- cryptorchidism, which only occurs in children when the testicles have not descended into the scrotum;
- paraphimosis, i.e. a defect in the foreskin that makes it difficult to bring it down onto the glans; treated with treatment or surgery analogous to phimosis.
The urologist also treats defects such as an enlarged prostate gland. It also deals with erectile dysfunction and impotence problems that often result from prostate enlargement or cancer. A urologist diagnoses and treats varicose veins, which may be problems with male infertility.
A urologist is also a specialist in diseases of the urinary system in men, women and children.
He deals with the treatment of, among others:
- urolithiasis, which is the build-up of deposits in the kidneys or bladder that can trigger an attack of renal colic; can be treated with pharmacology, invasive techniques or surgery,
- haematuria, which is manifested by blood in the urine, which requires detailed diagnosis,
- residual urine in the bladder,
- urinary incontinence
- kidney cysts,
- infections and inflammations of the urinary tract and organs of the urinary system. These are especially infections or inflammations of the urinary bladder in women.
The tasks of the urologist also include the treatment of neoplastic diseases of the testicles, prostate, kidneys or bladder. This is done in collaboration with the oncologist.
Urological examination
Before visiting a uurologist, it is worth taking care of proper hygiene of intimate parts. It is worth taking the results of previous tests – blood tests, urine tests or imaging of the urinary system – for a direct visit. It is also worth writing down the names of the medications taken, as the doctor may ask about them during the visit.
After the interview, the surgeon starts the examination. In women, it is mainly based on tactile assessment of the lower abdomen and the lumbar spine. Then he checks the perineal area. Often a urologist will order a urine test.
The study of men is slightly different. In the case of external diseases, an eye examination is performed, in the case of testicular diseases, palpation or ultrasound is performed. In the case of prostate disease, the examination is performed through the anus. The doctor then inserts one or two fingers into the anus, assessing the shape and size of the prostate.
