Almost every male over 50 will have this problem sooner or later. The time of the epidemic, however, is a period when diseases that do not show visible symptoms are postponed by many Poles. Urologists are still struggling with their patients’ thinking – if it doesn’t hurt, then it’s not too bad – that’s what most men in their 50s think, even though they wake up several times each night to urinate. “I thought that at my age it must be like that” – they usually say when they see a urologist.

– Women in Poland have known for a long time that they do not go to the gynecologist when something hurts, but regularly every year. And gentlemen usually come to us when it’s bad – says dr hab. n. med. Igal Mor, who in his over 30 years of professional work as a urologist treated several thousand men.

«In the Mazovia Hospital in Warsaw, I meet every day patients who, unfortunately, already require surgery. These are patients from various social groups – not only businessmen, but also officials, teachers, retirees, representatives of all social and professional groups. People who do not want to or can no longer wait for the epidemic to end and go to the hospital for a classic surgical operation. They know that with this disease it can be very serious in six months – neglecting the benign enlargement of the prostate may lead to kidney failure or the need to wear a catheter permanently, significantly weakens the potency and libido » – says I. Mor.

  1. What are the first symptoms of prostate cancer?

What do urologists propose to patients who need surgery?

– There are several methods and depending on the region of the country, the doctor’s education or the technical capabilities of the facility, either pharmacological treatment is proposed until the end of life, or a surgical operation requiring a long stay in the hospital or – in my opinion, the best for the patient – laser treatment – says Dr. n.med. Igal Mor.

«There are several types of lasers, but the mechanism of their operation is similar. These treatments are completely different than classical operations. First, they do not require a long stay in the hospital. The procedure involves endoscopic access to the prostate through the urethra, without cutting the abdominal wall. Therefore, it is minimally invasive and is associated with slight bleeding. Most often, after 24-48 hours, the patient leaves the hospital and goes home. What is very important – it does not need a catheter. He also does not need anesthesia during the procedure, because regional anesthesia is sufficient, less invasive and less stressful for the patient’s body, who often has comorbidities at an advanced age, increasing the risk of complications after classic surgeries.

After the procedure, the patient may discontinue the medications he had previously taken every day for years. After a week of sick leave, the patient can return to work »says I. Mor, adding that nowadays patients cannot afford to be sick for a long time – they have jobs, families, responsibilities, grandchildren, passions. In addition, during an epidemic, a long hospital stay is associated with the risk of contracting COVID-19.

Has the time of the epidemic reduced the number of treatments? “Patients get sick regardless of whether there is an epidemic of SARS-Cov2 or not.” To prof. Patients from all over Poland have come to Mora in recent months. A large group are those who were refused treatment in other hospitals due to an epidemic or were offered a date e.g. in a year.

According to prof. Moiré postponement surgery often leads to irreversible damage to the bladder, stones in the bladder, infections and kidney failure. The sooner the appropriate radical treatment is implemented and the cause of the trouble in the form of a large prostate is removed, the better the treatment results and faster recovery.
