UroFuraginum is an over-the-counter drug used to treat lower urinary tract infections. Especially for women, they are a great discomfort, pain and burning sensation when urinating. Unfortunately, it is associated with frequent visits to the toilet and general malaise. What should I know about a drug before taking it? Here is some information about it.

UroFuraginum is an emergency medicinal product urinary tract infections.

The active substance of the drug is furagin (aka furazidine), a derivative of nitrofuran, which is characterized by a broad antibacterial effect. It works well in the case of various infections of the lower urinary tract, mainly those caused by Escherichia Coli, Enterococcus spp. Or Straphylococcus aureus. These infections include, for example, cystitis and urethritis. Furagin inhibits the synthesis of bacterial proteins and damages bacterial DNA, thanks to which bacteria cannot multiply. UroFuraginum, on the other hand, turns out to be ineffective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and some strains of Proteus spp.

The drug is in the form of uncoated tablets, each tablet contains 50 mg of furaginium. Auxiliary substances are: maize starch, sucrose, colloidal anhydrous silica, stearic acid.

The treatment takes about a week. According to the information contained in the leaflet, dosage UroFuraginum for adults should be as follows:

adults: the first day of treatment – 2 tablets 4 times a day; consecutive days – 2 tablets 3 times a day.

In addition, the specialist should be informed during the visit about all diseases and about medications and supplements taken, because furagin interacts with certain substances. The measure is best taken during meals rich in protein, which increases the effectiveness of therapy. The tablet should be washed down with plenty of water. Important: do not mix the drug with alcohol!

Even in the event of an acute urinary tract infection, it is not always possible to reach for furagin. Contraindications include: hypersensitivity to nitrofuran derivatives or the excipient of the drug, renal failure (creatinine clearance below 60 ml / min or elevated serum creatinine), diabetic polyneuropathy, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.

Importantly for pregnant women: it is a contraindication First trimester of pregnancyy and the period of pregnancy from 38 weeks and the period of delivery – then there is a risk of haemolytic anemia in the newborn. The product is not intended for breastfeeding women.

In the course of some diseases and conditions, you should not reach for UroFuraginum on your own – it is advisable to consult a doctor beforehand, or to carry out check-ups. Particular care should be taken in severe renal dysfunction, anemia, deficiency of B vitamins and folic acid, lung disease.

The drug should not be used in children and adolescents.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding and the use of UroFuraginum

During pregnancy (regardless of the trimester) and breastfeeding, consult a doctor before taking any medication!

UroFuraginum should not be used during pregnancy, especially in women in the first trimester. It should also not be used from the 38th week of pregnancy and during childbirth (then there is a risk of haemolytic anemia in the newborn).

If the doctor recommends taking the preparation in the third trimester of pregnancy, special care should be taken. The preparation should not be used during breastfeeding.

Using UroFuraginum with other drugs

Before using the drug, inform your doctor about the medications you are currently taking and about the medications that you plan to implement in the near future. Information about planned surgeries and various types of procedures should also be provided.

UroFuraginum may interact with the following drugs:

  1. nalidixic acid,
  2. aminoglycosides and tetracyclines,
  3. atropine,
  4. vitamins from group B,
  5. chloramphenicol and ristomycin,
  6. uricosuric drugs such as probenecid and sulfinpyrazone.
