Research shows that every fifth woman over the age of 20 suffers from urinary incontinence. The conviction that it is mainly an ailment of the elderly makes younger women downplay this issue and do not use a doctor’s advice. This is also due to the fact that urinary incontinence is still an embarrassing and less publicized problem. Failure to take any action may aggravate the dysfunction, and it certainly causes stress and anxiety that affect the quality of life.
Urinary incontinence has been called a social disease in the world. The chart below illustrates how large the percentage of women have a problem with this compared to other social diseases.
What are the causes of urinary incontinence?
Physiological causes
• weakening of the pelvic floor muscles, the so-called stress urinary incontinence – manifested by leakage of urine during e.g. sneezing, coughing, exercise;
• overactive bladder – this is a pressing pressure on the bladder that makes you think you need to go to the toilet immediately;
• pregnancy and childbirth – urinary incontinence is caused by too much strain on the muscles and hormonal changes;
• obesity, hormonal disorders, menopause.
Neurological causes
• central nervous system dysfunctions often caused by diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke.
Other reasons
• birth defects and previous procedures and operations, which may also result in urinary incontinence;
• smoking, alcohol abuse.
