Urea

The name of this substance does not sound very noble, however, in cosmetics and cosmetology, urea is considered a very respected ingredient. Still – after all, it has a triple positive effect on the skin. We will tell you why and how exactly it is achieved.

What is urea

Urea used in cosmetics is one hundred percent synthetic product, namely carbamide, which was learned to be obtained in the middle of the XNUMXth century, opening a new era in the history of organic chemistry. It was then that the German chemist and doctor Friedrich Weller for the first time managed to artificially produce a substance that is a product of human life.

Urea in cosmetics is a synthetic product

In our body, urea is formed as a result of the breakdown of proteins that are excreted from the body in a known way. Hence the name.

The fact that urea can have a beneficial effect on the skin was noticed even before the synthesis of an effective cosmetic ingredient. Recall the folk method of treating burns. In human skin, urea also plays an important role, being part of the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) – a complex complex of substances that retains moisture in the skin.

Useful properties of urea

Urea has several functions at once, for which cosmetologists and dermatologists love it and actively recommend it.

  • Moisturizing. Urea absorbs water like a sponge, thus creating a reserve of moisture that is used by both the superficial and deep layers of the epidermis.

  • Cell renewal. Urea stimulates the production of enzymes that accelerate the renewal of epidermal cells, but unlike acids, without a visible peeling effect on the skin surface.

  • Antiseptic and analgesic effect. Urea reduces inflammation and reduces the sensitivity of nerve endings.

Urea in cosmetics acts primarily as a moisturizing ingredient. It can be found in creams, emulsions, gels and serums for the face and body. The percentage of urea depends on the scale and specifics of the problem.

Restrictions on use

There are two types of urea used in cosmetics:

  • Hydroxyethyl – it is this form of urea that is presented in cosmetic creams that have a moisturizing, soothing, softening and renewing effect. It is completely safe for the skin.

  • Diazolidinyl – acts as a preservative, is used in small doses, and in this role it also does its job perfectly. However, like any component, it can cause individual intolerance. In general, urea in cosmetics is a safe and effective moisturizing ingredient.
