One heating technique requires a connection to the network, the other works independently. If the design includes a circulation pump and has a closed combustion chamber, then the model is connected to the network. Power surges adversely affect the operation of components and parts. Therefore, experts recommend installing a UPS for a gas boiler.
How does a UPS work, why is it needed
We have all experienced a situation where the electricity was cut off in the room. It is good if there is a central heating system. But if your house is heated individually by a gas boiler, then it will gradually cool down – and you risk freezing.
There are several ways to solve the problem:
- Connect new equipment that does not depend on electricity.
- Additionally, include a non-volatile boiler in the piping, which will start up in case of power outages. Pretty expensive way.
- Use solid fuel heating equipment. The use of firewood and coal is not always convenient compared to gas.
- Connect an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The device will enable the boiler to function stably until electricity is supplied.
The current is indicated on the graph as a sinusoid. The more “cleaner” and more geometric it is, the more stable the feed. Getting a constant sine wave from a generator is difficult. And an uninterruptible device provides such an opportunity.
What blocks does an uninterruptible power supply consist of:
- inverter. It is this part that converts the battery voltage to AC. Pure sine wave ensures safe and stable operation of the equipment.
- stabilizer. Normalizes the current to allowable values for the boiler.
- Uninterruptible battery (battery) for UPS. As long as there is voltage from the network, the battery accumulates energy. After disconnection, it uses the accumulated reserve to maintain the connected devices.
The principle of operation of the uninterruptible power supply is based on the accumulation of energy during the heating of the boiler. As soon as the current stops flowing, the source switches to a charged battery, which powers the equipment until electricity is connected.
Types of uninterruptible power supplies
Now you know that an uninterruptible power supply provides a stable output voltage. This is important for the normal operation of components and parts of equipment: pump, valves, modules. But this does not mean that any device can be used. For example, a computer source is not suitable for a heating boiler, because its offline mode lasts only 10-15 minutes. In addition, for a phase-dependent unit, the correct “phasing” of the circuit is important.
According to the technical device, the uninterruptible power supply is divided into three types:
- Off-line (offline). The simplest models. Their work is also simple: the maximum and minimum voltage are set in the settings. When the mains values cross this mark, the relay switches to the batteries. As soon as the readings are normal, there is a reverse switch from the battery to the main circuit. The downside of the device is the switching delay, the lack of a stabilizer. Plus – simple connection and low cost.
- Line-interactive (line-interactive). Compared to the previous one, the design includes a stabilizer. This allows you to secure the device during surges in the network. Line-interactive is able to support equipment for 15-20 minutes. However, the relay also switches on with a delay, which leaves the boiler without power for a short time.
- Online (online) with double conversion inverter. Initially, alternating current (200 V) is converted to direct current (12 V). Then the inverter converts it again to AC, but with a pure sine wave. The device works instantly. It is the best choice for gas boiler. But there is one drawback – the high price.
By installation method:
- wall type. Compact devices with batteries that can be connected remotely.
- Outdoor. Powerful uninterruptible power supplies for heavy loads. For industrial purposes, several products are connected in series to increase power.
How to choose the right UPS
What you should pay attention to when buying:
- Battery type. For boilers, the following types of batteries are made: AGM, AGM GEL. Some users on the forums claim that it is possible to use a car battery, but this is not the case. It will quickly fail with prolonged use and deep discharge.
- Connection power. In order to calculate this parameter, you need to take into account the power of all connected devices (pump, automation). It is important to understand that when the pump is started, the current values u2bu3bcan jump 20-XNUMX times – this is called an inductive load. Therefore, add another XNUMX% to the total.
- Time of action. How often do you have power outages? The operating time of the UPS depends on its capacity and battery charge.
For gas appliances “Baxi” (Baxi), “Buderus” (Buderus), “Visman” and other models, it is recommended to connect an uninterruptible source of the online type.
If the uninterruptible power supply has a battery included, then you do not need to calculate the capacity. Otherwise, find the “maximum charge” in the characteristics of the device. Multiply the number by 10 and get the required capacity.
The device is connected by hand. Installation is carried out in a clean room. All that is needed is to connect the positive terminal of the battery to the positive terminal of the UPS. If there are several batteries, then each plus of one is connected to the minus of the other. The remaining battery terminals are connected to the UPS connectors.

For a long time I selected a UPS for Baksi equipment. I settled on the Calm device because of the suitable capacity and cost. In addition, I connected several batteries. It’s been working fine for a year now. In the event of a power outage, “Calm” quickly works and keeps the boiler on.
“Teplokom”
The product from the company “Bastion” includes two batteries. The operating time depends on the capacity, it can be up to several days. In this case, each battery is 12 V. The capacity is 40–200 Ah. Power depending on the model 450–600 W. “Teplocom” provides a stable sinusoid, its body is located on the wall in four positions. Mode indicators are located on the panel.
The price is from 5 rubles.

After thinking about what to do: buy gas appliances with an uninterruptible power supply or choose a non-volatile device, I settled on the first option. For the Proterm model, I chose a source from the Bastion company. It came with rechargeable batteries. The only drawback of the device is the noisy rotation of the fan..
Luxeon UPS 500
An autonomous UPS combines several devices: a stabilizer, batteries, a surge protector and a protection unit. Power is 0,5–1,5 kW. The battery is charged up to 10 A. The operation of the Luxeon UPS 500 is controlled by an electronic microprocessor. The range of generated sinusoid is from 100 to 280 V. Built-in fan to protect against overheating. Large LCD displays all settings and current modes.
The cost is from 6 rubles.

After frequent interruptions in the light, I thought about buying an uninterruptible source. I was looking for an option with a stabilizer to protect parts from sudden surges in the network. I have been using Luxeon UPS 500 for three months already, no complaints. One inconvenient – manual start after shutdown. Well, happy with the purchase.
Install an additional power supply or not, it’s up to you. Consider the frequency of power outages in your home. If this happens regularly, then a UPS is necessary not only to maintain a constant temperature in the room, but also to keep the equipment safe.
