Update on wisdom tooth surgery
How is the intervention carried out?
Extractions of the four wisdom teeth usually take place under local anesthesia externally (and not in the hospital). The teeth are then extracted from the side generally in two sessions. It may happen (depending on the difficulty and the patient’s fear) that a general anesthesia is required, which requires hospitalization. An anesthesia consultation before the operation is then essential.
During the operation, the doctor incises the gum, then releases the wisdom tooth by milling the bone. Sometimes it is necessary to cut the tooth into several pieces. Then, one then precedes the reclosure of the gum using absorbable threads which disappear spontaneously in less than 3 weeks. When they are responsible for irritation or infection, it is sufficient to contact the surgeon who removes them manually. The duration of the intervention varies according to the situation, but it rarely exceeds the thirty minutes. In the event of general anesthesia, the duration of hospitalization does not exceed two days. Contrary to popular belief, the procedure is not painful in itself. It is the following days that can be difficult.
