A month has passed since the first officially detected case of an infection with Omikron – a new variant of the coronavirus that has caused concern among scientists and governments around the world. Although the variety is present in over 50 of them, it is still not known how big the threat is and how it will affect the pandemic in the long run. However, doctors are trying to regularly share their observations on the course of COVID-19 in patients with Omikron. Recent reports say, among others about the unusual symptom of infection that patients experience at night.
- Research into the nature of the Omicron, a new mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is ongoing all over the world
- Until now, most cases of infection with it are characterized by a mild course
- Among the most common symptoms of Omikron infection are, among others fatigue, headache and a scratchy throat
- Another, less common symptom that patients experience at night has recently been discovered in South Africa

A new symptom of Omikron infection
New information about the Omikron was provided by Dr. Unben Pillay, a family doctor who runs an individual practice in Johannesburg (South Africa, South Africa). At the briefing, organized by the South African Department of Health, the doctor reported the symptoms reported by patients whose COVID-19 was caused by infection with a new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Among them was one atypical, which, according to Dr. Pillaya, he should pay special attention. It’s about night sweats – exceptionally increased sweating of the whole body, resulting in the need to replace linen and bedding.

The South African doctor added that he also treats patients with symptoms such as dry cough, fever, fatigue and severe pain throughout the body. He also noted that, according to his observations, patients vaccinated with COVID-19 cope with infection “much better” than those who are not.

South Africa – the epicenter of Omicron and the main source of information about the new variant
Until now, the largest number of reports on the nature of Omicron came from South Africa. For good reason. The country was the second, after Botswana, to detect the first cases of infection with a new strain of coronavirus. It was also there that the spread of this variant was fastest, and on such a large scale that today Omikron is the dominant variant of SARS-CoV-2 in South Africa. Its epicenter is in the province of Gauteng (its capital is Johannesburg), where the country is currently diagnosed with the highest number of COVID-19 cases.

The observations made so far by local doctors show that the majority of infections with Omikron are mild and the symptoms are not severe, and these data mainly concern vaccinated people. This is good news in the context of the scientists’ findings, who were terrified by the number of mutations detected in the new variant (over 50). It was found that this strain may be much more infectious than the previous ones, which were also rated “variant of concern” (according to the official WHO nomenclature).
Other symptoms of Omikron infection
The symptoms of Omikron noticed by doctors (not only from South Africa) include:
- severe fatigue,
- scratchy throat
- slight headache and muscle pain,
- slightly elevated body temperature.
Moreover, children may develop less specific COVID-19 symptoms. British family doctor David Lloyd says that 15 percent. small patients recently confirmed to be infected with a novel coronavirus variant developed a rash. In addition, the children complained of fatigue, headache and loss of appetite.
However, specialists keep repeating that these observations were made on a relatively small group of people, mostly young and not burdened with comorbidities. Omicron’s symptoms, virulence, immunity to available vaccines and its impact on the development of the COVID-19 pandemic require further research.
