The Portuguese charter airline Hi Fly recently made its first flight without using disposable plastic items on board. Instead of the usual plastic, 700 passengers used bamboo cutlery, paper and containers that could be composted.
This solution is absolutely in trend. More and more airlines are thinking about how to replace plastic on board.
For example, Air New Zealand will use edible containers. They are made by London-based designers from bio-waste – banana skins, seaweed and rice husks.
The move to organic tableware will allow the company to completely stop using plastic cups, water bottles, sauce bags and lunch trays. In total, we are talking about 55 million different items that are made of plastic.
Other airlines are not lagging behind. Irish airline Ryanair has pledged not to use plastic on flights and in its offices by 2023.
And Alaska Airlines became the first American airline to ditch plastic straws back in May 2018. It was followed by other American airlines such as Delta and American Airlines.
Plastic pollution has become a global problem. Plastic is found in large quantities everywhere: from the depths of the sea to Everest, where special actions are already being taken to collect the garbage left by climbers.
As a reminder, earlier we told how the world’s first beer flight took place, and why the pilot ordered 23 pizzas right on the plane.
