Unpleasant smell in the apartment: how to get rid of? Video

An unpleasant smell in an apartment can spoil the impression of the most original interior and the most expensive furniture. Doubtful scents spoil the mood, cause headaches, soak clothes and hair, which does not add to your charm in the eyes of others. The fight against an unpleasant odor in the apartment should be started immediately after you have felt it; later you can adapt to it and not notice, but the guests will feel from the doorway.

Unpleasant smell in the apartment

Than it smells?

The first thing to do when an unpleasant odor appears in your home is to find its source. Sometimes it is quite easy to determine what and where it smells from – it may be ashtrays, trash can, litter box or pet cage that have not been cleaned in time.

If all suspicious places have been removed, and the smell continues to bother you, check the operation of the ventilation – perhaps the ventilation shafts need to be cleaned. Walk through all the rooms in sequence. The smell in rooms can come from new, recently purchased or, on the contrary, very old furniture, from a wardrobe or from a carpet that has been spilled on more than once.

Inspect the secluded corners – have your pets chosen them as a toilet or pantry for food supplies

In the kitchen, the source of an unpleasant odor can be a stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator. Check if the drain pipes in the bathroom and kitchen are not clogged. Scouring sponges, rags and cloths for dusting and cleaning the floor can all smell very bad.

Getting rid of odors in rooms

The most effective way to get rid of old odors is to make repairs in the apartment, completely replacing the wallpaper, repainting the ceilings and walls, replacing floor coverings and furniture upholstery. Few can decide to take such a step, and, fortunately, in most cases it is possible to remove unpleasant odors from the house without drastic measures.

Airing and wet cleaning for a while will certainly save the day. However, the smell may reappear soon after cleaning.

Ventilate pillows and blankets more often – take them out to the balcony or outside for a while

If there are animals in the house, such as a cat, the smell of cat urine can be a real problem. Be sure to clean the litter box on time, so as not to provoke a clean animal to look for a new place for the toilet; do not forget to clean the cages of rodents and birds. It is very difficult to remove the smell of cat urine from carpets and sofas – sometimes it is easier to get a new carpet than to clean an old one. Rinse the floor where the cat stains with water and vinegar, or temporarily cover the floor with regular baking soda, then sweep the baking soda and wash the floor with water. In pet stores, you can find special products that neutralize the smell; treat the surfaces marked by animals with it.

If the smell comes from the closet with clothes and linen, all items in it will have to be washed. The only thing that has been removed to the shelf without washing can become a source of a musty smell, but clean things, after lying in a closed cabinet for a long time, can smell unpleasant. Ventilate the closet, remove moth repellent from last year.

The smell of tobacco is especially persistent. The “fresh” tobacco smell can be removed simply by hanging wet towels around the room, which will quickly absorb the smoke, and then airing the room. If the smell is old, you will have to work hard – clean upholstered furniture and carpets with special means, wash furniture capes and curtains.

Hot spots: kitchen and bathroom

In the kitchen and in the bathroom, unpleasant odors appear most often. High humidity in these rooms is largely to blame for this. Make sure that the ventilation works well, if possible, install a hood above the stove.

It will not be superfluous to remind you that containers for garbage must not only be emptied daily, but also washed regularly. Place containers with lids instead of the usual buckets and make sure that no water gets inside.

Make sure that wet towels are not hung in the bathroom for a long time, dry and rinse well the napkins and rags with which you wash the floor and wipe the dust. If an unpleasant smell comes from a sink or bathtub drain, cover it with baking soda and pour in a few liters of very hot water. Place vessels with coarse salt or crushed activated carbon in the corners – these substances perfectly absorb foreign odors.

It is not uncommon for an old toilet seat, no matter how often you wash it, to smell. In this case, the only way out is to replace it. After each wash, do not rush to close the washing machine – let it dry from the inside, wipe dry the places where moisture accumulates.

Cutting boards can be wiped with vinegar or salt. Do not allow splashes of fat, escaped milk or boiled soup to remain on the stove for a long time: the longer food leftovers dry on the surface, the more difficult it is to wash them later and the worse they will smell every time you turn on the stove.

In the kitchen, you need to check all the cabinets for storing food and throw away anything that has deteriorated. After that, wipe the cabinets from the inside with a sponge dipped in vinegar

If you are worried about the strong smell of cooking food that pervades the whole house (fish is especially famous for this), immediately after cooking, heat a little salt in a pan or fry a handful of coffee beans, boil water in an open container with vinegar added.

To remove unpleasant odors from the microwave, boil water with orange peels in it. Get a special lid and reheat food only under it – this way food particles will not get on the walls of the microwave and cause an unpleasant smell.

Room aromatization

To get rid of the unpleasant smell, it is not enough to spray the room with your favorite perfume or freshener. When mixed together, the smells can form a very offensive cocktail. Any fragrances should be used only after thorough cleaning, they should not interrupt suspicious odors, but fill clean air with a fragrance.

How to remove odor from an apartment

Choose a special air freshener that neutralizes foreign odors.

You can hang canvas bags with dry tea, coffee beans or activated carbon tablets in the rooms – they will absorb odors, and coffee and tea will additionally serve as sources of a pleasant aroma. Place the same bags in the closet where you store your clothes or bedding.

Start an aroma lamp or a special incense burner for incense sticks, place candles with essential oils in the rooms. An excellent means for aromatizing the air is vessels with dry mixtures, they can be purchased ready-made or picked up on your own.
