“Unpleasant” amorphophallus: photo

The Royal Society of Florists of Great Britain summed up the results of a vote, the aim of which was to identify the most unattractive plant in the world.

The winner of the rating is the giant amorphophallus, or titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum). This tropical flower earned this dislike primarily due to its disgusting “aroma”, reminiscent of the smell of rotten meat.

However, 4% of those surveyed named amorphophallus as their favorite plant. “The very structure of this flower deserves admiration!” – wrote many respondents. And it’s hard to disagree with this.

Titan arum is a plant with a single leaf and the largest flower in the world, reaching a height of 2,5 m and a width of 1,5 m. The flower consists of an elongated or oval ear, which usually envelops a red-brown “veil” that is corrugated in the upper part. On the inside of the ear there are bumps and outgrowths that serve as traps for insects to pollinate the flower.

The plant lives for about 40 years and during this time it blooms only a couple of times, each flowering lasts about 2 weeks.
