The unique reconstructions of the larynx and trachea, using the periosteal flap from the femoral epiphysis, are carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday by the doctors of the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology in Poznań. Four patients undergo the treatments.
For the first time in the world, the trachea will be reconstructed in a new way, a section of which will be removed due to post-traumatic stenosis.
Prof. Małgorzata Wierzbicka from the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology of the Medical University of Poznań, all planned procedures are rare on a European scale. Therefore, two surgeons from Austria came to Poznań to participate in them.
The patient whose trachea will be reconstructed is a 55-year-old man who was treated after being crushed by a bull. For the first time in the world, we will use a periosteal flap for this operation – told PAP Prof. Wierzbicka.
Specialists also undertook the removal of the laryngeal tumor, restoring the previous shape of the lower part of the larynx and the upper part of the trachea with the help of a flap. As explained by prof. Wierzbicka, the reconstruction will restore the airway patency. It is the third such procedure in the world; earlier ones were also carried out in a clinic in Poznań.
In the other two cases, the laryngeal cartilages will be restored in patients operated on for laryngeal cancer. The procedures are to allow decannulation, i.e. removal of the tracheotomy tube. (PAP)
