Cocktail “Uncle Vanya” is remembered for its rich sweet and sour taste with a light citrus aftertaste. The second name is “Uncle Vasya”. Thanks to its simple composition, in just a couple of years the drink became a hit in Russian bars, eclipsing such world-famous shots as B-52 and Hiroshima. It is customary to drink it “on the road” before leaving the bar, the fortress is 12-15% vol.
The author of the recipe and the time of appearance of the cocktail are unknown. According to one version, the drink is named after the play by A.P. Chekhov “Uncle Vanya”, written in 1896. According to another, the recipe was invented by a bartender named Ivan. There is only no doubt that the recipe appeared among Russian-speaking lovers of bar culture, and the “Uncle Vasya” cocktail became due to the fact that drunken visitors could not always remember the name correctly, confusing names.
Composition and proportions:
- vodka – 20 ml;
- lemon juice – 20 ml;
- grenadine (pomegranate syrup) – 20 ml.
The proportions of the ingredients may vary, but there should be more vodka than other ingredients. In the male (“sour”) variation, 25-30 ml of lemon juice and 10-15 ml of grenadine are used, in the female (“sweet”) – on the contrary, 25-30 ml of pomegranate syrup and 10-15 ml of lemon juice.
If you replace the grenadine with tomato juice, you get a Bloody Ivan cocktail.
Cocktail recipe Uncle Vanya (Vasya)
1. Pre-chill all ingredients.
2. Pour pomegranate syrup on the bottom of the shot.
3. Using a bar spoon or a knife blade, place a layer of freshly squeezed lemon juice on top of the grenadine (pre-strain through a strainer to remove the pulp).
4. Add vodka with the third (top) layer. Drink in one gulp.
