Yesterday, on the first day of a nationwide vaccination campaign against COVID-19, Britain was given thousands of doses of the Pfizer vaccine. However, two medical workers experienced allergic reactions. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) immediately issued a warning not to administer the preparation to people who have a tendency to this type of reaction.

Side effects of the vaccine on COVID-19

The drug regulatory agency is investigating the matter, and its head, Dr. June Raine, during a parliamentary committee hearing, reassured the public that extensive studies of the vaccine had so far revealed no similar side effects. She also added that patients must be closely monitored “before, during and after” the administration of the vaccine. In an e-mail sent yesterday evening to directors of medical institutions, health officials said they were “collecting data and providing information after conducting their own investigation”.

It is known that these health workers are allergic (they always carry an adrenaline syringe) and their medical history is documented. It is also known that they do well with the right treatment. Unfortunately, it has not yet been established which component of the vaccine sensitized them so strongly.

Meanwhile, prof. Stephen Powis, NHS England Medical Director, released the announcement: “The MHRA warns that people showing severe allergic reactions will not be vaccinated against COVID-19 after the same reactions were seen in two people yesterday.” This means that anyone who applies for the vaccine today will be asked if they are allergic.

The MHRA also released the announcement: “Anyone who has had a history of a severe allergic reaction to a vaccine, medicine or food (such as anaphylactic shock) and anyone who has been advised to wear an epinephrine syringe should not get Pfizer / BioNtech.”

In addition, it was ordered that a resuscitation device be available at each vaccination site.

The COVID-19 vaccine is no exception, like other preparations of this type, it can cause side effects, which, however, are mild and disappear after a few days.

The government’s chief medical advisor, Dr. Chris Whitty, told MPs: “It is very important to start the immunization process as this is when we detect common side effects and gather more and more information over time.”
