Using Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense as an example, we’ll learn how to read the sunscreen packaging so that we can choose the right UV protection for ourselves, preventing a host of negative effects on the skin, including wrinkles.
How to read a sunscreen package
The choice of cosmetic care is not the easiest thing, and when it comes to sunscreen, it is also very responsible. After all, not only the present, but also the future of the skin depends on the effectiveness of the product and its characteristics.
Of course, a sunscreen, like any other cosmetic product, must first of all be pleasant to use and have a certain set of qualities that determine its capabilities and degree of protection.
The choice of sunscreen must be approached responsibly.
Is it possible to learn everything about sunscreen without asking a consultant or Google for help? Yes! If you can read what is written on the package.
Meaning SPF
The higher the SPF (Sun Protection Factor, sunscreen), the higher the protection against burns and the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation on the skin. The maximum value adopted in European countries is SPF 50 (+). This means that, on a percentage basis, a product with SPF 50 provides a degree of protection of 97%.
Broad Spectrum Protection
Pay attention to the following markings:
A in a circle;
the phrase broad spectrum;
Well.
All of them mean that the product provides protection against type A rays (UVA), which provoke photoaging (wrinkles, dryness, hyperpigmentation) and irreversible changes in cell DNA. While Type B (UVB) rays cause redness, burns, and sunburn, sunbathing can be done responsibly.
filters
There are two types of filters used in sunscreens:
chemical come into contact with solar energy and transform it;
physical (mineral) – reflect the sun’s rays like a shield. One of the most common is titanium dioxide.
For additional skin protection, the filters in the sunscreen formula are fortified with antioxidants.
For which skin
The manufacturer always indicates on the packaging who the product is addressed to. Most sunscreens are supposed to be suitable for all skin types. But lately, more and more often we see specific recommendations on packages: for oily and problem skin, for sensitive skin, etc. You can find out what type of skin you have with our test.
Texture
Finally, we have reached the most important point, because how the product will lay down, absorb and behave on the skin depends on its success with the consumer – that is, with us.
Modern sunscreens, fortunately, can have a very light texture. (ultra light, lightweight), not to be felt on the face, not to provoke blockage of pores and greasy shine.
Most popular formats:
fluid – more often recommended for oily and problem skin;
cream-gel – this texture is usually comfortable for any type of skin;
aquagel, gel – suitable for normal and oily skin;
cream – its richer texture is preferred by owners of dry and prone to dry skin;
milk or emulsion – lighter texture than cream, well absorbed;
solar water is a relatively new format, it is a biphasic product that has an even lighter texture than milk or fluid, and is in the form of a spray;
spray – the smallest particles of sunscreen are sprayed onto the skin, creating a sensation of a veil.
