Unfortunately or fortunately, people cannot shed their skin to renew it. But they can buy a scrub and in one session restore smoothness, softness, and a beautiful even shade to the face and body.
What are scrubs for?
But when the skin becomes too thick, protection becomes an obstacle not only for harmful substances and microorganisms, but also for the beneficial ingredients of serums and creams. This is from the outside. And from the inside – for the full functioning of the skin:
- interferes with the outflow of sebum from the pores;
- slows down internal update processes.
Under a dense “cover” the skin becomes dull and uneven.
The main element of the scrub is exfoliating particles.
Scrubs are the simplest solution to this problem. With the help of abrasive particles of different sizes, degrees of density and hardness, they provide the skin with exfoliation (exfoliation) and simply mechanically remove excess dead cells.
Here’s what happens as a result.
- The skin is deeply cleansed from the remnants of cosmetics, pollution from the air, excess sebum.
- Opens pores to prevent comedones.
- Improves the outflow of sebum.
- The skin begins to breathe and more effectively get rid of toxins.
- The complexion is changing for the better.
- Exfoliating particles massage the skin, improve microcirculation and overall tone.
- Energetic effect enhances lymphatic drainage, reduces swelling.
- After scrubbing, the effectiveness of care products and cosmetic procedures increases, because it is easier for the active ingredients to penetrate deep into the epidermis.
The main element of the scrub – exfoliating particles. They differ in several ways.
Size
Larger ones are designed for dense skin of the body, smaller ones for the face.
Softness
- Natural sugar crystals, ground nut shells and fruit pits, salt, crushed shells (diatomaceous earth) are fairly coarse abrasive particles that are used to exfoliate the skin of the body.
- The natural exfoliants listed above, but ground into powder, are part of facial scrubs.
- Polymer particles – very soft, without sharp edges – completely exclude skin injury, having a massage, tonic effect.
- Wax particles are even softer, they are used in products for irritated skin, where gentle exfoliation is needed.
Against the backdrop of a general trend towards versatility, modern scrubs offer additional care – they contain oils, moisturizing ingredients. In addition, during exfoliation, the skin becomes more receptive to beneficial substances.

Working mechanism and efficiency
“The mechanism of this exfoliation is based on the removal of the upper layers of the stratum corneum,” explains the medical expert. Vichy Ekaterina Turubara. And tells how different types of scrubs work.
Abrasive means give effect much faster: dead horny cells are mechanically torn off the skin, immediately releasing the young layers of the epidermis.
If you are using chemical peelings, there is a gradual destruction of the corneo desmosomes (bonds between the cells of the stratum corneum), after which they exfoliate on their own. Of course, this is a slower process.
Gommaji as if they stick dead scales to themselves and remove a very thin layer: this is less traumatic, but also less effective.
Types of body scrubs
Body scrubs have an excellent tonic and massage effect. And in the anti-cellulite program, they are simply necessary. Some types of scrubs are quite suitable for daily care, others – for use once a week.
Classic scrub
Tonic with abrasive particles for deep cleansing of the skin 1-2 times a week. Great for exfoliating rough feet.
Scrub soap
A regular bar of soap has a moderate amount of abrasive particles added, usually along with moisturizing and emollient ingredients. Designed for daily care. It is addressed to those who prefer soap to body gels and mousses.
Scrub Cream
Usually a gentle enough product that can be replaced with a shower gel and used daily. The exfoliating particles are not too aggressive, and the product itself includes, in addition to the exfoliant, foaming and caring ingredients (for example, oils). On the one hand, they soften the contact of exfoliating particles and the skin, and on the other hand, they nourish it.
Types of facial scrubs
Facial scrubs are no less diverse.
Classic
They are used 1-3 times a week, depending on the type of skin: the fatter it is, the more often you can use a scrub. True, oily skin can be sensitive, so you should focus on subjective feelings and the condition of the skin after the procedure.
After scrubbing, the effectiveness of care products and procedures increases.
Universal
Today, manufacturers offer products from 3-in-1 to 7-in-1. They are addressed to owners of oily, problematic skin and can be used simultaneously:
- as a cleansing gel with exfoliating particles;
- as a scrub – with a more thorough massaging of the skin of the face;
- as a cleansing mask, when the product is applied to the skin, left for 3-5 minutes and then washed off with massaging movements (for a scrubbing effect).
Scrub Cream
As a rule, these are soft and delicate exfoliants enriched with nourishing, moisturizing substances that are used daily instead of a gel or foam cleanser. In terms of effect, they are closer to gommages, therefore they are suitable for sensitive, dry, dehydrated skin.
Scrub mask
A handy combination for deep cleansing at home. Applied to the skin, it works exactly like a mask, cleansing the pores, absorbing toxins and saturating the skin with beneficial substances. And when washed off in combination with a light massage, the product becomes a scrub and stimulates blood circulation, lymphatic drainage, enhances the effect of active ingredients. Used 1-2 times a week.
Scrub peeling
For maximum effect, mechanical exfoliation is combined with a light chemical peel. That is, exfoliating particles are added to a product containing glycolic or other acid for home peeling.
The scrub does not go well with cold and even cool water. For better exfoliation and more effective aftercare, it is better to apply it on steamed skin. A warm shower or a warm terry towel put on your face is enough.
