Types of correctional schools: special for children with developmental delay

For children with developmental disabilities, different types of correctional schools are suitable. Only in such a school is a small person able to assimilate the amount of knowledge that will help him adapt to the modern world.

What are special schools for?

Special babies are born quite often, which plunges parents into depression. Some moms and dads, moving away from the first shock, make efforts to help the baby grow up happy, others try to pretend that they have an ordinary child.

The types of correctional schools are divided according to the characteristics of children

Once in a regular school environment, a special student cannot fulfill the requirements of the program. Teachers have no additional education and do not know what to do with the baby. Often such a child suffers from ridicule in the classroom and withdraws into himself.

In a school with correction, there is a correct approach and systematic teaching. There are 6-15 students in classes. Psychologists-defectologists, teachers and doctors work with students, who regularly improve their qualifications. The program is aimed at developing potential skills and adapting toddlers.

Educational institutions for children with special needs

There are several types of schools, taking into account the peculiarities of the development of babies. Some of them work in a boarding school format, since narrow specialists are not always available in remote corners of the country. The following schools are distinguished:

  • for deaf students;
  • for hearing impaired and hearing loss at a later age;
  • for the blind and with residual vision;
  • for the visually impaired and those who have lost their sight at a later age;
  • for babies with speech impairments;
  • for babies with musculoskeletal disorders;
  • for children with mental retardation;
  • for mentally retarded children.

For some serious illnesses, teachers come to the house. Sanatorium schools are suitable for some groups of kids.

Programs in such schools are focused on the development of communication skills, adaptation and mastery of knowledge. The techniques allow developing the residual capabilities of the missing functions or replacing them with others. Hearing impaired students are given the opportunity to “hear” the sound of a musical instrument through vibration using the touch.

In special classes, children practice communication and adaptation skills

Modern teaching methods allow autists to build relationships with the outside world through pets: horses or dogs. Educators use art therapy when deaf students play music or dance. With the right approach, babies with cerebral palsy differ little in their capabilities from ordinary babies. In addition, a small person finds himself in a benevolent atmosphere where he does not become an outcast because of his difference from others.

Classes for retarded toddlers

Developmental delay is not always pathology or mental retardation. Some delay may be associated with the passage of pregnancy or inattention to the baby. The little man does not differ from his peers: well, the speech is worse or he began to speak later. The main problems start at school. He is catastrophically unable to cope with the school curriculum. Begins “deuces”, the indignation of teachers and reproaches from parents. The kid begins to feel like the worst. Sometimes, parents reward the little person with unflattering epithets: “dumbass”, etc. In fact, the kid is simply not able to cope with the program, he needs a corrective class.

A psychologist or teacher who understands the situation can suggest that parents transfer the student to a correction class, but not everyone agrees with this. The corrective class is not a “class of fools”, but a place where the student will be helped to master the necessary knowledge.

The advantages of this class:

  • a small number of students, which allows the teacher to pay attention to everyone;
  • professional training of teachers;
  • the opportunity to improve your cognitive abilities;
  • the opportunity to get secondary education in an accessible form;
  • transfer to a regular class after 2-3 years of work in a correctional class.

The latter shows that the correction class is intended for healthy students who are prevented from forming their abilities on time. However, a student can complete his studies in a corrective class, which will not diminish his rights to enroll in a university.

Any student has the right to receive a decent education, regardless of the characteristics of his development. Each trait group has its own schools or classes.
